Rear shocks

I was looking at my airbags yesterday and noticed the piston rod from the
shock absorber sticking up behind my control arm..must be time for new
rear shocks. I know this has been discussed before, what are you all
using. I have stock airbags etc.

KYB. Check to make sure that when you install it, the hood doesn't rub on
the bogie casting. I suspect that is what causes broken shocks. I had to do
a touch of grinding on my right-front and left-rear shock, which use the
same casting, to clear the dust hood on my KYB's.

After a dozen years, the two KYB's I just took off the front (and that I
will put back on) are still holding gas just fine.

Rick,

During your absence from the GMC net there was a LOT of discussion here about the Bilsteins not being as "good as they used to be."

Also be careful when installing the rears that the bracket that protects the PowerLevel air line "T" in the driver side wheel well
does not interfere with the top of the KYB shock as the bogie arm moves up and down.

I like Bilstein better than KYB and have them all around, BUT....

1. It is just about impossible to get Bilstein to honor their warranty on a GMC. They will send you a copy of the a GMC manual page on proper
jacking and say you did not follow the manual.

2. If you do not completely deflate the rear air bag before jacking, you will blow the oil seals in the shock. I blew two of them before I realized
what was happening.

3. KYBs are cheaper.

Thanks all ,yes Ken I probably blew my shocks when I had my Michlens
installed at Costco a few years ago and didn't deflate thankfully they
were old shocks even back then. Jim I guess I'll be calling you again
tomorrow.

The Bilstein shocks are noted for that defect.
They refuse to warranty them.
The KYB does not have problems, I know the new batch of Bilsteins have a
bigger shaft and different inner supports now.
