Scott this brings up an interesting point that we have never really touched
on and that is the factory authorized distributers and repair facilities for
genuine GMC parts. Like anyone I like to save money if I can get good
original or better parts. At the same time I have mixed feelings. The GMC
motorhome is the only coach over 10 years old that is still fully supported
by the factory. Should we support them so they will stay in business? One
of the nicest things about the GMC coach is that I can get almost any part
within 24 hours no matter where I am on the road. Just a thought.

Did you forget the message??

I went through the same sequence when I replaced all my brake lines last
summer. You can check the archives but I believe I had everything matched
up OK except I didn't have the right hose thread to match the brakeline T in
the middle. I thought I had the threads right but had failed to measure
things first so ruined a set of hoses by cross threading them.

Anyway at that point I was tired of messing with it and bought them Golby.
If my memory is correct their price was reasonable when compared to
individual hoses.

I didn't go further to see if I could find a threaded hose to match the T.
It may also be possible to make or buy a T with the right threads but I
didn't pursue it.

My conclusion was that I would have been better off buying the correct hose
and investing my time doing something else but then if I hadn't gone through
this exercise I wouldn't be nearly as wise as I am now.

Enjoy

Hi Gmc!

Has anyone ever replaced rear brake line rubber hoses and mounting tee with
something not original. I have been trying to come up with something. ( I
hate looking at weatherhead fittings and hate silicon caulk. too!)
Someone, please make it easy for me.

PS. Been kicking the tires on the GMC for two weeks now--foot hurts- Freddy's
even stopped lifting his leg- starting to fall in love with GMC again!

Replace them with new ones. I did. Sirum or Bounds
can get them for you. Plus other GMC shops carry
them too. I think I paid about $60 for set of two
but they can be a b#$@* to put on with corrosion.
Be prepared to cut and re-flare lines. I was lucky
and they came off ok but my coach has been stored
inside for the last 15 years.

Good Luck

Scott,
Unfortunatly, the rear brake hose is not available from your local parts
source, you will have to look to one of the GMC specialty parts sources.

The 2 sources I am familiar with is Cinnabar, Gateway and Golby.

Cinnabar says theirs use a brass center block and is better, of course you
pay for that "better".

If the unit gateway offers uses seperate hoses threaded into a brass center
block, I am very familiar with the set and can tell you they work well.

The unit Golby has uses a steel center block, not that that means anything
to its reliability, some people think so. The price is reasonable and I
know many people who have used thm and are very satisfied.

You take your pick!!!

I would also like to comment on the portion of this thread regarding where
to buy parts. I feel, even more than parts, that you should look to
someone you can turn to and ask questions and feel comfortable with when
problems come up. The parts are available out there, its a matter of
figuring out what you need and get help finding it.

No one supplier can boast of carring every part, this is why I recognize
and recommend different suppliers for different items. I too offer unique
parts not found at other suppliers and am constantly on the look out for
new ideas. The GMC specialty parts suppliers need and rely on your
support. They, in turn, should do their best to support the GMC community
with fair pricing and honest, considerate customer service. This is the
only way our coach can continue to enjoy its steady digest of fresh parts
and have upgrade components as new options.

OEM parts and their distribution is important in that it is our link to the
manufacturer. Aftermarket parts and suppliers are equally important in
that many other features & options can be added to the coach that make it
even more convienant and destinctive.

I have a cartoon on the wall in my garage of a restored model T and a blown
bucket passing on the road. One driver shouts "Lousy butcher", the other
answers "stupid purest"! I would like to think of myself as a little of
both and I think thats important!

It is best for the GMC community to work together and show non GMC owners
how much fun owning one of these classics can be and how much support the
GMC motorhome has.

This mail list is a great platform to communicate ideas and promote good
will. It would be a pefect thing if I could figure out how to group the
like posts together, it takes so long to scan each days offerings one at a
time. Maybe someone could support me by helping me figure this thing out!

Thanks for your time,
