My experienced (w/ 455 cid engines) mechanic has advised me that my engine is likely not capable of making the 100 mile round trip to Shawnee (oil pressure drops very low after 30 minutes of idling), so we need to cancel the "CAMPING" portion of our reservation.

We will be "commuters" from our home in SE Oklahoma City.

Too little time to get our 30' travel trailer out of hibernation to bring it and camp.

Change the oil pump to one with high volume. :) About two hours of work,
get to camping. :D

Its 1970's tech. I would see if a can of STP oil treatment would make enough difference to make the trip.

I put a quart of Lucas heavy duty oil stabilizer in the CFO's Honda Odyssey when it developed an impendingly fatal knock. It kept it going for a few
hundred more miles while she looked for something to trade it in on. As far as I know, the dealer that stole it from her for next to nothing on trade
in turned a hefty profit when he unloaded it on the next sucker without fixing it (repair cost was going to be more than the value of the car). I
would have kept a quart of that in every subsequent oil change until the engine came apart, but SWMBO doesn't like the risk of coasting to a stop on
the side of the road just to get 10 - 20,000 more miles out of a jalopy.

Mac, why would you idle an engine for 30 minutes? That won't even keep the
cam bearings and valve gear lubed. Not a good idea.

Since you cannot remove the engine's oil pan without removing the transmission I am wondering how you propose changing the oil pump in two hours???

How much of that two hours is for in and out of the transmission?

History:

Coach threw belts on way home from previous Shawnee rally and engine developed SEVERE knocking from lack of coolant circulation!

New belts and hoses installed at local shop after front-end lift tow to shop.

Tried to go to Dothan. Severe knock returned after 50 miles or so.

Towed home and parked in driveway.

Later, I discovered much coolant was gone, which probably caused that second knock which probably was the next to last straw.

Mechanic discovered one "freeze" plug with considerable leakage and at least one more that were suspicious.

Extended idle to check for leakage on replaced "freeze" plugs.

Mechanic had already been able to hear rod or main bearing knock.

Time for "new" engine.

I need to check with the GMC shop in Austin, TX to see if they can do an engine R&R. If so, I'll get the coach hauled down there and order an S&J engine.

Commuting current best option.

I'll follow my mechanic's recommendations as best course!

O.K. Mac. I concur with your mechanic. But, the knocks are the indicators.
It helps to have the whole picture.

I didnt factor in a transaxle removal, just the labor for the engine work.

I presume you're saying the higher RPM Oil Pressure is low after 30 min,
not just idle OP?

Forget my note -- I missed the other replies. I wouldn't drive that one
around the block either. :-)
