Radio Harness adapter

I'd like to replace my radio with something newer - I don't have that many
8-Track tapes left. : )

I've seen the various adaptor harnesses and plugs in the auto stores and
Walmart. Is there a existing adaptor that would mate with the mating plug in
the GMC wiring harness - basically a plug with unterminated wires?

A good wiring diagram of the existing radio connections should make the
conversion easy. Just cut off the old harness and wire the new one in. There is
only one power lead, one lead connected to the dash lights and all the other
ones just go to speakers except for the ground. Darren

John,

I second what Darren and Rick just said about it being simple to identify
and splice into the O.E. radio wiring harness.

I just installed a Kenwood radio in my '77 and the wire colors were exactly
as shown in the wiring diagram. Yellow was power switched via the ignition
switch, grey from the dimmer switch, etc.

Purchased the unit from Crutchfield and they were very helpful in general
but did not have a wiring harness adapter for our units.

Rick:

I'm told also that Crutchfield has a widget to take care of the grounded
speaker system problem when changing to a modern radio.

You can also find the radio wiring harness (for a GM vehicle of our vintage)
at Radio Shack. It has wire bare ends.

John,
Suggest checking with Crutchfield (800-955-3000 or www.crutchfield.com)
for adapter plugs. NOBODY knows more about car audio than Crutchfield.
OTOH, check your speakers. If you find one lead is grounded to the
body/frame, you'll have to rewire them to work with a modern stereo. (I
believe GM changed around '77, so you may be OK.)
