Radiator Work

Good morning. I am going to be removing my radiator before long to have it recored.

Hopefully I will be able to remove the oil/transmission lines from the radiator without damage. I will be replacing the oil cooler lines, as they look
to be original.

I assume that in order to recore, they will hot tank the radiator to clean it and unsolder the tanks.

Here's my question. Should I plug the oil and transmission cooler fittings on the radiator to isolate those cooler units? Or leave them open?

What does everyone typically do?

Ask the radiator shop. Most have a machine that pumps hot brake fluid - or whatever - through it in both directions. If nobody lunched the mill with
the oil cooler connected, it ought to clean up. If it's got engine internals in it, I'd go for an outboard cooler.

Wonder why you wouldn’t just replace the internal cooler. With the tanks
off there ain’t much to it.

Seems like I saw some pictures somewhere showing the original coolers were superior to those in new radiators now, but someone may have some first
hand knowledge.

Greg,
Bothe the trans and Oil coolers are multi plate units that can only be
totally cleaned by a FAA certified shop as they are almost impossible to
flush out.

Is it a good idea to put a remote filter on the transmission coming out of the cooler?

Engine oil filter is after the cooler. If the filter has a bypass it could bypass at cold start or if neglected. There is also a differential
pressure bypass in the cooler adapter that could allow bypass under certain conditions. Especially if you are one of those that like to run the
15W-50. The trans filter is the first thing in the circuit and acts as a pickup before the pump.

I believe Rob Mueller studied the various pressures and bypasses. Perhaps he'll join in here. Unless he's out at stoplights acting the fool in the
