Radiator core

I think the PO cheated a little. If you look at this picture of my
radiator - removed- it looks like there are about 10 fins per inch and not
the 14 per inch that is recommended. Like Al says, some get the elevator,
and some just get the shaft. I doubt if I will get 30 percent more
cooling, but it will be interesting to see the difference when I can get
the radiator up to pressure and have the larger core.

Gene: When I get a chance I will check mine. What a problem to find
now. Did you get it out OK. I remember you were going to work on
it- so by looking at the pictures I assume you did.

Hi Buddy

Yet it was sort of easy, and did not require cutting anything. Now I have
to wait till wed after the 4 th to get it recored. would guess I will be
able to put it back next weekend. going over to Arts for dinner on the 4
th and watch the fireworks. Hope you have a nice 4 th

cool as well --too tight----sigh, I am going over to talk to him now, will
let you know what the result is going to be.....nothing is ever easy..

Ya gotta BELIEVE! Chuck Aulgur can pull a Tracker, full throttle up a 7%
grade and not get over 195 degrees, that's the kind of information I want.
I just got back from a 3800 mile trip and the only slowdown I had was
pulling the Tracker up a 5%, 10 mile long grade. Tranny temperature went to
250 and engine to 220 at 55 mph about two thirds of the way up. When I
slowed to 40 and second gear it cooled right down but my next radiator will
be to Chucks specifications.

Gene - I would put the radiator guy's statement in the same category
as the statements that have been made about coolant flowing too fast
in the engine block causing overheating.

Granted that additional tubes will cause less open surface area
through the radiator -- BUT -- with a given air pressure at the front
of the radiator, the velocity of the air would be increased going
through the reduced space. This, added to the increased surface area
of the tubes and fins would result in an increase in total heat
transfer.

In any liquid/air heat exchanger design situation the limiting factor
is determined by one side or the other. In this case I feel that the
liquid side is dominate and increasing the surface area of the
tubes/fins will result in an improvement.

This is not just theory since Chuck Aulgur has reported actual
experience with this modification. I would personally go for it.

Yep well it was a pressing saga.... I was real glad I had the GMCnet behind
me....

First he said 14 fins per inch would restrict the flow to the rear tube, I
said that was the GMC stock and that was what I wanted, he argued a bit and
then found that was the stock.

Then he said the 53 tubes would restrict the flow and should go with 10
fins per inch, I said nope, I know I want 14 fins per inch and just wonder
what the cost difference would be...... was more than I thought and others
might get a better deal but this is what he came up with

10 fins per inch 42 tubes (what I had)$360
14 fins per inch 42 tubes (stock) $380
14 fins per inch 53 tubes $440

well that is what I went for, and he finally said to a guy on the phone
"this guy seems to know what he wants" So they built the core today and
will attach the tanks tomorrow and I should get it back on the road by this
weekend. As I left he said " you should have a big fan to draw the air
through this rad. I said" oh yah--- Haden sever duty" just like I did this
all the time. He said yep that should do it.
