How do I tell Radial Steel Wheels from Bias Ply Steel Wheels?

The radial wheels are stamped "radial" on the inside about 90* from the
valve stem hole and have the part # 27995 and 85 lbs. Non-radials (bias)
wheels are stamped on the outside face of the wheel p/n 27604 between the
two lug holes nearest the valve stem hole. (Lanier Foote 9-7-99)

RADIAL WHEELS
Radial rated wheels were first introduced in the mid 1976 GMC motorhome
model year, before that the wheels were made for bias belted tires. A
radial wheel has to be made stronger because of the side pressures exerted
from the tire. Many members wonder if they have radial wheels since a lot
of previous owners of 73 through mid 76 GMC's changed over to radial
wheels. The word RADIAL is stamped on all radial wheels. Very often the
mounted wheel will have to be removed from the motorhome to find the
marking since it is located on the outside of the wheel, but it's on the
side next to the brake drum or brake rotor and not on the hubcap side. Some
members have been looking on the inside of the wheel by taking the tire off
the wheel, but the marking is not located there. The marking is located
across from the valve stem on the opposite side of the wheel.

On our way the recent Western States rally in Ukiah we had a tire go down
and were surprised when the cause was determined to be the failing weld on
a non-radial wheel. Appearantly our '76 coach did not have '76 wheels. At
the rally, Kerry Tandy gave us his spare "radial" wheel an we were able to
safely return home. We put out the word, both at the rally and when we got
home, that we needed radial wheels. Through the generosity of the GMC
community, we ended up with more wheels than we needed, a set of 6 being
donated by Dave Posey and transported some 400 miles packed into Al
Chernoff's VW Thing. Now that the new Bridgestones are mounted on wheels
certified for radial tires, it's time to find a new home for the extras.

We have 5 16.5" OEM radial steel wheels which we would be happy to donate
to any GMCer who needs them. Please contact me at the above address.

And Gene, could you please list them on the swap meet?
