Terry, let me take a stab at this; I just gave up "wannabe" status about a
month ago.
I had two different friends in the '70's who had GMC's and I sorta fell in
love with them then. For twenty years, I had it in the back of my mind that
I'd get one some day. Then about 3 years ago I slipped up and bought a 21
foot SOB, a class C on a GMC van chassis. It was nice, handled reasonably
well, seemed to suit my needs. Then for some reason I stumbled on this net
right after Patrick started it up and started lurking. You guessed it, I
started wanting one again. But I couldn't find what I wanted without getting
into the high dollars. So I've hung around and learned a lot about them. By
doing so, I was pretty sure I knew what I was looking for.
A few months ago, I took a job managing a project four hundred miles from
home. I thought it would be neat to live in my little SOB for a couple of
months. By the time a week had passed I was ready to set fire to the folding
bed; it was killing me. So I got smart and found a heckuva deal on an '88
Pace Arrow 34 footer with a queen bed. I slept well for the duration of the
project.
Then I started driving it home. It got 5 1/2 miles to the gallon. Couldn't
maneuver it at all in a parking lot. My wife wouldn't even consider driving
it. The more I looked at it, the more I realized that it was a trailer house
on a truck chassis.
But then I got lucky---Patrick posted a note about a '78 Palm Beach that was
for sale at the same time that a dealer made me a decent offer on both my
SOB's (actually made $1500 on the Pace Arrow) so I jumped on it like ugly on
an ape.
All I can tell you is---there ain't no comparison. Get someone to let you
drive a decent GMC for a couple of hours (if you're anywhere close to
Lubbock, Texas, you're welcome to mine) and you'll never have to ask again.
Heck, it's worth it for looks alone! And my wife has all but taken it away
from me. She's taken the kids to the lake in it by herself twice in the
month that I've had it...
I do know where there are a couple for sale; can I suggest that you post
what it is that you're looking for and what your budget is and let us help
you find it? Might as well have a hundred eyes looking all over the
country...

ps are you sure you aren't exaggerating a little on the 2 to 3 times thing?
That hasn't been my observation, everything else being equal...maybe you
just looked at a couple of dogs?
