Bob,
The "choke chain" is what Manny uses: A length of chain with a hook on
each end. Hook into the round access hole on the right side of the bell
housing, beneath the transmission and across the top to reach back to the
top side of that same hole. Catch the slack with a hoist hook left of the
distributor. His gantry for the hoist is a low (18" maybe?) device: Two
inverted "T's" of angle iron to sit across the hatch opening with pipe eyes
on the free ends of the verticals. Through the eyes a short piece of
end-threaded pipe (1"?), with caps for retainers, provides the support for
the hoist.
Simple to build, easy to store, and all that's needed for the job. He and
I R&R'd a transmission on a city street in Pismo Beach in '13. 1:40,
IIRC. HIm underneath with exactly the right wrenches and me inside
following hoist operating instructions.
