Help? On page 92 the 1977 Operating Manual states 250 foot pounds. Seems
like I read somewhere that was an error. Would someone with more expernce
please chime in with confirmation or the correct torque.

Lenore and I are getting all set for the Tucson GMCMI Convention.

Since the Shawnee gathering I’ve installed 7 solar panels totaling 960
watts, supplying 500ah LiFePO4 lithium batteries. We will be leaving this
Wednesday, with a week of boondocking in Big Bend National Park on the way,
then more boondocking in the Grand Canyon area, Utah and Colorado
afterwards. I’ve not yet replaced our compressor style 12vdc/110vac
Norcold fridge. This month long outing should give the new solar system a
good test.

Looking forward to seeing everyone in Arizona.

Thanks and hugs,
Vern and Lenore

Vern, the 250 ft lbs is correct for I am steel wheels. The Alcoa and other
alloy wheels are 120 - 130 ft lbs.

Thanks Jim,

I’m glad I checked, as I have the Alcoas.
I’ll set my torque wrench for 125!

See you soon!

Thanks Emory!

You are correct. Duh, I only needed to read the info on the nuts
themselves. They are clearly marked 140 FT LBS.

I’ll re-torque to 140, and note it in my manual.

What a wonderful community we have!

While you're boondocking in the Grand Canyon area, check the weather and if
it's favorable, go to Toroweap Overlook. It's 65 miles from North Rim to
Pipe Spring NM, a must-see, IMHO. From there you take a good gravel road
63 miles to Tuweep Campground and Toroweap Overlook. At the overlook, you
can literally get out of the car, lay down, and look 3000' straight down at
the Colorado River.

This web site tells all about the place, making it sound MUCH worse than
I've found it on either of my two trips there:
https://www.hitthetrail.com/toroweap-tuweep/ However, I didn't take the
GMC there either time. There is a campground across the road from Pipe
Spring (once called "Mad Rabbit Campground", but I think they've changed
the name).

I FAR prefer Toroweap to anywhere on the S. Rim, and there are NO crowds.
But it may be too early in the year to go there.

Thanks for the tips Ken. We also plan on dropping by the BLM Office to see
if we can win the lottery to hike in to “the Wave!” I understand that on a
typical day you have about a 1 in four chance to get a permit. 40 or so
folks typically show up, and 10 permits are issued for the following day.

Hugs my friend!

The torque difference is mainly in the nuts being used.
The Alcoa has a seperat washer attached that allow for slipage as it is
torqued. The original is a solid nut with large base that drags and must
overome the friction.

I thought it was pretty neat when I read the "Goldilocks" explanation of torque. The torque on a bolt is also an amount that you are actually -stretching- the bolt.

If you don't stretch it at all (no torque) the nut has a tendency to simply rotate free.

Stretch it too much (over torque) and it's likely to snap.

But if it's torqued the correct amount, the stretch of the bolt has just the right tension on the nut to stop it from rotating free.

Glad you and Lenore are going, Vern.

Your trip sounds great. Hope you win the lottery for The Wave.

See you in Tucson.

My Alcoa nuts, with washers attached to go against the wheel (as Jim
described) has 140 ft/lbs stamped on them.
