There are two types of propane tanks in use: ASME and DOT. The American
Society of Mechanical Engineers is the one normally installed in RV's. They
are horizontal and permanently installed. The DOT tanks in California have
to be inspected and recertified every 10 years. The ASME tanks do not -
ever. Most tanks on trailers installed vertical on the hitch are DOT tanks.
All the tanks installed on our GMC's from the factory were ASME tanks. I
used to carry around a printout in the coach saying that they did not need
to be inspected but have not run into that issue lately.
