In my case, it became obvious. The previous owner had rebuilt the engine. The intake manifold was nicely painted. After driving down to Vidalia for the Spring Rally, the paint on the intake manifold where the exhaust crossover went was burnt. The rest of the intake manifold remained nicely painted. This made it obvious to me that it did not have the block off plates. Is there an easy way to tell if block off plates have been installed? Is it only possible to tell by removing the manifold?
Just a cautionary question to avoid issues when they are inconvenient.
Thanks
An IR thermometer can be used to see if the crossover section spikes in temperature. Is there an easy way to tell if block off plates have been installed? Is it only possible to tell by removing the manifold?

In the photo, you can see the charring where there are NO block off plates installed. Richard's suggestion of an IR thermometer works also.Thank you. I will take a look at mine today and see if that is true of mine as well.
Thanks again.

Hmmm... Is there such an animal as paint that changes color with temperature changes that can also withstand higher temperatures? In the photo, you can see the charring where there are NO block off plates installed. Richard's suggestion of an IR thermometer works also.
Yes. "Temperature Indicating" crayons or paint.Hmmm... Is there such an animal as paint that changes color with temperature changes that can also withstand higher temperatures?
Excellent. Thanks very much Tom!Yes. "Temperature Indicating" crayons or paint.
Your local Airgas, and other welding supply houses, will have them.

McMaster has them in about 50 degree increments.

Amazon has them too, although figuring out what one is actually ordering from Amazon industrial supply listing is always iffy.
Both the crayons and the paint are available for $20ish.
Good Luck.

The intake is a bit of a job. You do have to drain down the antifreeze.I finally got a chance to check the manifold with an IR gun at operating temperature. I'm not sure what I found and would appreciate any opinions. If I need to drain the antifreeze and pull the maifold I would rather do it when I want to not when I have to. The passenger side was less than 250 but over 240 and of course the IR thermometers flucuate as you watch them. The drivers side was over 210 but less than 220 and flucuating. Other places that I checked were about 200 to 250 so I'm not sure exactly what to think. I didn't like that I had that much difference between the sides. Like I said I appreciate and opinions on if I need to pull the manifold or I'm ok like it is. Thanks
