Problem changing Airbag

My airbags look pretty bad with lots of cords showing around the plastic
cones.

A new spare with aluminum cones came with my coach so I decided to install
it today.

The nuts were rusted to studs so studs came out of bags instead of nuts
coming off.

This job quickly turned into a big mess requiring the hot wrench (torch).

I'm glad it was sitting at home base.

Yep, one more thing to check before you get caught 90 miles from
civilization.

It might have been easier if the factory had used some Nevr Seize.

Don there is a very good article about changing the bags in the September
1997 issue(#13) of GMC motorhome News. It may have saved you a lot of four
letter words and skinned knuckles. I would advise anyone contemplating
working on their bags to buy it 1-800-720-2227

My experience with BOTH air bags when they came off. I laborously used a
Dremel with a cutting wheel as opposed to using the ol' "blue flame field
adjuster" -- ESPECIALLY on the driver side (where the gas lines converge in
that regulator in the wheel well). Once I cut a deep enough slot, the old
air chisel made pretty short work of the nut.
THIS IS A GOOD TIME TO REMEMBER TO BE CAREFUL WITH OPEN FLAMES AROUND A RIG
PACKING LP AND 50 GALLONS OF GASOLINE -- NOT TO MENTION ALL THOSE H2
PRODUCING BATTERIES.

Thanks to all of you for the help, cautions and condolences regarding the
@#$%^&%$#@! airbag nuts.

I once worked with a UVA English professor who took great pride in being
able to swear profusely in seven languages. He would have appreciated the
verbal skills of the professional mechanic who took pity and gave me a hand
yesterday.

I'll do better when I get to the other side.
