Since I can't seem to get any info on a new power steering pump I ordered a rebuilt from Applied. I need to change pulley to new one. Does anyone know if the Allen nut on the end of the shaft is a right hand or left hand thread. Can't tell direction of pump when it's out now. Used electric impact in trying to get it off turning left. No luck even with heat! Maybe it turns off right??? Can 't force it much more or there will be nothing left of the alien key hole.
Any ideas?

Decades ago I had to replace a power steering pump on a Ford and swap pulleys. The end of the shaft had an allen head, but the pulley was pressed on.
After heat and a pipe wrench turned but didn't remove it is when I figured out it wasn't threaded. The pulley looked bad after all that, but was true
enough to do the job.

Jon,

Is there a nut on the shaft of your PS pump? I think not and that you're
trying to unscrew the allen socketed shaft of a pressed on pulley. What
you need is a puller for that pressed on shaft. Last week at GMCMI
Mansfield, I replaced the PS pump on my '76 X-Birchaven. I borrowed a tool
kit from AutoZone. The puller in that kit clamped around the groove of the
hub of the pullled. Its forcing screw seated against the shaft which
you're apparently trying to turn with an impact wrench. With moderate
torque on that forcing screw, the pulley slid right off of the shaft.
Another tool in the kit pressed the pulley back onto the rebuilt pump's
shaft.

The fact that GMC used both tapered (nut retained) and straight (pressed
on) pulleys leads to such confusion.

Also: while I think all GMC's used the higher pressure pumps, when you
remove the large nut retaining the reservoir (the high pressure output),
you'll free a shuttle and spring; that shuttle, depending upon its length,
sets the output pressure, so if you use the shuttle from your old pump,
you'll set the proper pressure. At the very least, compare the lengths of
the two shuttles.

The puller Ken described is the same thing I "borrowed" from Orielly to do
mine. It was only $25 to buy it so I kept it.

A socket on the puller shaft tomorrow and use the impact wrench. Hardened shaft will either splinter, totally ruin the nut ?? Or get the pulley to pop off. Does anyone know where I can buy replacement pulley as I may need it?

The Harbor Freight tool works better on several of the types of pulleys than the expensive ones from Snap-On and Matco. It also installs many of the
pulleys better, but the jackscrew in my set tends to get stuck in the pump threads and sometimes I need to use the 3/8 impact wrench to get it back
out. Keep the threads and bearing lubricated and it will last a long time. I've done about 25 pulleys with mine so far. Also, pay attention to the
spacing behind the pulley before you remove it so you can get it back in correct alignment for the belt. Usually the end of the shaft is flush with
the pulley and it may be difficult to press it on farther than that if you use the tool properly, but it is very possible to run it on too far and
then you will have to pull it back off some.

I have the Harbor Freight one. It is a low use item for me but absolutely necessary every three of 4 years on some vehicle. At the time I bought it
they were around $15.00. It works great on GM vehicles. I can not say anything about other brands.

Success!! I bought Northern Tool set for pulley removal. Heated and quenched with PB blaster a few times. Watched the utube videos, including the guy that ruined his pulley. I had to use my electric impact wrench but it finally came off. Thank you everyone for your ideas and information. Now I have to wait for delivery from Applied.
Are there any secrets to getting the air out of the system? Now I just have to install new high capacity water pump, new plastic fan and clutch, new self exciting 140 amp alternator, new isolator/ combiner combo, voltage regulator for Stewart warner temperature gauges, new voltage limiter for my radio and backup cam that burned out and I will be ready to drive it again. These machines are a labor of love.

These machines are a labor of love.

Jon,

Most alternators listed as "self exciting" have no remote sense capability. In such case, the isolator will be an imposition to effective charging
and the combiner had better be able to carry the total load.

The secret to getting the air out of the power steering is to cycle the system. To do this easily, either park the front on sand or old magazines (no
joke) and swing the box through its full travel lots of times.
