Anyone have a better replacement dust cap than the Dorman (13997 I believe) in the GMCMI sub book.

I got a couple of the Dormans and found that while the right 2.5" diameter, they will not tap into place properly. The shoulder is tapered so it just
falls back out.

Thanks.

Bruce, it's not the Dorman caps, it's your hubs. That bore varies a whole
bunch from hub to hub. Those things are crude.

Should there really be two caps? Mine has a dust cap over the nut and then
another larger on the hub. Is this necessary?

Hi Jim,
No doubt the hubs are likely not machined to tight tolerances there, but the OEM caps fit well. Two of them had cracks from previous removals so I
wanted to replace those. The Dorman tapered from 2.46" up to 2.6"s and not in a straight taper but more roundish. I think that is more likely the
poor tolerance.

Hi Bob,
I'd be interested in purchasing a couple inner caps from you. Since I'm in Canada, I'LL try sourcing something local due to the high shipping and
customs costs.

Thanks guys.

Bruce, I have worked on dozens of these hubs, and both the smaller hub
dust seals, as well as the cosmetic larger ones frequently are quite
sloppy. If your originals fit well, I would straighten them with a body
hammer and anvil hardy and use them. Especially the inner, small ones. You
do not want any dust or water getting in there.

Try straightening them and brazing the cracks.

The inner one is really a grease cap. The outer one is a dust cap.

I could fix them, but didn't think they would be so hard to find. One had been previously replaced by a Dorman which looked exactly like the new ones
I ordered, but it fit. It also had rust inside it, so I did not want to re-use it. I ordered 2 new Dorman's, one to replace the existing rusted
Dorman, and one to replace another that was beatup and cracked. Of the two new Dorman's, I could only get one to stay on, so for now I've reused the
OEM cracked one.

I don't have torches to braze them, but looks like there is no viable replacement, so I may need to take it to a welding shop to fix.

You might be able to salvage your tapered caps by using an exhaust pipe expander to gently correct the tapered section so that the cap will fit better. The expander trick may also help make the 2.45” trailer caps fit better if you decide to try them.

Bruce Hislop writes : Does anyone have an open hub so they can easily measure the ID of the dustcap surface ? Bruce; I have two reference hubs here
that I use for

fitting up brake projects. The major dia. on both hubs is 3.540" +/- 0.001" , the minor dia for the smaller ( inner ) dust cap is 2.500" +/- 0.001",
hope this helps. If you

require further measurements , call or email me .

I used the Dorman Ford replacements IIRC. Not sure if I still have the package out in the RV. Check tomorrow if I remember

Albert,
Thanks for those measurements. I dug around in my scrap metal bucket and found the old Dorman cap. It also has a taper, but not as much, it measures
2.503 at the largest point.

I found some trailer caps which are also 2.503 that are not expensive, so I'll order a set of two and try them. From the picture though they are not
very deep. I'll report what I find.

Found the card from the dust cap package(I keep it in GMC)...not Dorman package, came from NAPA. Part # 735-1404. Says it fits Ford and on the back
says fits 2.5 inch wheel hubs.

David,
Contact our parts and have them check on used rear chromed dust cap.
Should we have them, they will be around $20 each.

I googled your NAPA number and found an Amazon listing. The photo there shows the exact cap I have under Dorman, including the "M" stamp.

It shows it as being 2.43". Hence maybe the taper so it will fit a range of diameters. To bad it won't stay on!

Thanks for looking :)
