Play-doh in the lighter socket

Hi All,

So, while packing up at the end of my last camping weekend I noticed a giant blue blob in the cigarette lighter. Evidently Boone(3), or Molly
Bee(18m) had discovered a good place to stash their Playdough. I thought I could get it out whole with some tweezers. I got a hold of a big blob,
but the remainder quickly started smoldering and smoking so I pulled the AUX fuse. I was a bit baffled by that because one would think that Playdough
is non-conductive. With the fuse out I cleaned out the socket as best I could while trying to keep two demon children from running off into the woods
or turning on all the gas valves on the oven.

So when starting the drive home I find myself with 15% battery on my phone. I put the fuse back in to charge off the front lighter but a very
uncomfortable amount of smoke begins pouring out of the socket. So I pop the fuse out, have my wife Stephanie shout directions at me from the dinette,
and get the camper back to storage and the kids back home.

We are going to take them back out to the coast this weekend and I'd like to get that front power socket back up. While the kids are this age
repairing the GMC is like trying to do Civil War surgury without anestisia -- any operation has to be completed in under 10 minutes or else its
doomed. Socket sets overturned, zip ties put to nefarious uses, or they just take off in two different directions knowning mom can only catch one of
them.

So I usaully have about 10 minutes to prep the camper while my wife gets the little ones out and into their car seats. Anyone have any idea how I can
make my dry smoking Playdough problems go away quickly enough that I can focus my attention on keeping my kids from distroying other things?

Pull out the cig lighter and buy a dual usb receptacle. Way more useful now
a days and safer too

Tim,

Don't feel bad, my sister put crayons in the boats fuel tank years ago and this then required that we sail the boat that was home through New York
Harbor.

In your case, all the childless experts seem to think that an occasional swat on the butt is abuse. It can also save a child's life.

(Have you considered handcuffs?) I really don't have an answer. While back, we were required to take on three grandsons. That two years were no
(ZERO) fun at all. One managed to pull an icicle off a front directional signal and rip the lens out of it. (Thanks kid!)

Actual information that might help... There is a Tupperware orange peeling tool that has a flat end that could be used to clean around the center
contact of the DC mousehole (I hate those things) If you do put in a multi-USB port, also plan to run a small sheet metal screw in alongside it so it
stays plugged in. (And also can't be removed and replaced with something strange.)

I enjoyed the comical way you wrote your post! And I'd avoid hitting
people that you love - someday they may be able to hit back and/or get a
lawyer! But I'm likely 15 years *under* the average age here...

If the Playdough injected socket has been smoking - I'd simply replace
it. Should only take minutes and then you can get back to helping tire
those kids out!

While we are on the subject of "Corporal Punishment", the old adage "spare
the rod and spoil a child" comes to mind.
When I attended public schools in Mossyrock school district 206, in
Washington state in 1940's and 50's, It was the rule, rather than the
exception. In the High School Superintendent's Office, directly behind his
desk on the wall hung a large plywood paddle, covered with hand written
names. If you misbehaved, you were sent to his office where you waited on a
hard bench outside his office door until called into the office. (Wait was
excruciating). If the rule infraction that you were accused of (teacher's
word was always the GOSPEL) your name was added to that paddle. If, GOD
FORBID, you found yourself back in that dreaded office, AND your name was
on the paddle, you bent over, grabbed your ankles and hung on and endured 3
swats on your tightly stretched jeans posterior.
Believe you me, you did not want a 3rd trip to the office. I've been
there twice, no fun at all.
In many cases, those swats were only a precursor to the treatment that
awaited you at home. Parents of the era supported their schools differently
than they do today.
Not exaggerated at all. Ask anyone who attended public schools in
Washington State during that time frame, they will have similar experiences
to relate.
