Tom --

I had that done to one of my hubs about 6 years ago when I first got our
coach. My brother-in-law/ace mechanic was concerned that the bearings might
need to be replaced. (The coach had 42k original miles) The right bearing
had been replaced at some point, and not by the book, if you know what I
mean. The bearings were really pretty good, but the hub wasn't.

I had it renewed with the plasma spray technique and was very happy with the
results. He had an 'official' GM/Olds tool set and we did it by the book
when it went back together. We used a press.

I'm due to have a look at these bearings again sometime this summer, so I
can't tell you till then how it held up, but I don't think there's going to
be a problem.

I've got 36k on these bearings now, which is more than the 20k I've heard as
the max before they're re-greased or replaced.

Sounds like you had the wrong bearings, poorly installed with low quality
grease. How long do you think they've been in service?

Probably for almost the life of the coach. Who knows! In my opinion this
may what is behind all of these stories about bearing failures. Without the
right equipment they could not be taken off except by burning with a torch.
I do not like to do that however as it is hard to tell what effect it has on
the metal. Therefore since the average owner without the right tools just
keeps driving the coach telling themselves they will have it done when they
find the right repair shop. In Northern New York where I am, do not know
where that would be.

Mine have been sprayed and machined. Let me know what shape they are
in when you tear them down.So far I've only got 5k miles on them .

My hubs have marks where the bearing at some time in the past seized and
left marks on it. Not deep but enough to have caused the bearing to be real
tough to get off. As long as I have every thing off might as well do them
right.

How much should the plasma coating and re-machining cost?

This is how Ken Thoma repairs hubs and he sleeves knuckles with harder
material. Don't remember the prices tho.
