personal experience wanted

Hi,
I have one on my 23 footer but don;t know much about how the group purchased
theirs. One fellow on this list did all the work (can;t remember who) and
did a group buy that seemed reasonably priced. Hopefully some other folks
will chime in. I don't have the electric and frankly it does not make sense
to me for a GMC as the thing is very easy to roll and unroll.

Thanks,

Dean,

It's been a long time, but IIRC, it was $1365 for either 4.5M or 5.0 M
Omnistor, plus $75 shipping to a commercial or $150 to a residential
address. Maybe someone else's CRS is not as bad as mine. With the state of
the $ vs the Euro, that's undoubtedly gone up.

Feby,

I'm the one who started the whole Omnistor thing about 3+ years ago. I was
just about to start importing the Belgian-made awnings through a dealer in
Holland when Richard Floyd, Vancouver Island, BC, managed to persuade
Carefree of Colorado to include the awning we want with their shipments from
Belgium of the other Omnistor products they sell.

Richard (rgf) is the exclusive dealer for the Omnistor we use.
You must place a prepaid order through him and wait for a large enough group
to be ready (I don't know what the minimum order is now). He then places
the order with C of C and they order the hardware from Belgium. I think
they get a couple of shipping containers per month from there; one of them
will have your awning in it. Then C of C installs the fabric of your choice
from their complete assortment, which is MUCH broader than the European
selection.

Finally, C of C ships directly to you.

If you want to try to import your own awning,
http://www.omnistor.com/gb/products/6900tech.php

is apparently the current version of what we ordered (IIRC, that was the
6502, no longer shown).

If you try to import directly, be prepared for lots of hassles, with
dealers, customs, shippers, and everyone else involved. And if it's damaged
in shipment you'll be on your own. Duties will be higher because most of
them are imposed on the fabric, which is a major reason C of C installs
fabric in the US. I say a little pray of thanks every day that Richard got
me out of doing the importing!

Contact Richard.

Oh yeah, electric motor: I didn't order one. I'm glad. The awning IS NOT
one you just push a button and get an erected awning. The awning extends at
a steep angle and MUST be supported at the outer side by extending the
concealed legs. Eliminating the hand cranking operation would be only a
minor reduction in the labor of erecting the awning -- which is not great.

That is very close to what we paid in March of this year thru Richard, although it would be best to ask him directly.

Gee, I wonder if United would let me hand carry one as baggage back to
