Having read the discussions on performance improvements in the digest I
thought of a couple of points. First here is the performance engine that I
am running thanks to a cash strapped Olds aficianado who had the engine
built.
455 that was balanced and blueprinted
0.020 over bore
CR 8.9:1
Isky 256/262 cam running straight up
Quadrajet primary: 49 rod 71jet
Secondary: stock CJ rods
Stock Lamy setup Distributor
MSD knock detector
MSD timing adjustor
Stock exhaust manifolds
3" exhaust with dual input, single 3" out flowmaster muffler
J heads with the AIR humps ground out
3.5 Caspro chain drive
On Duane Simmons Dyno (I-5 Grapevine) This engine ran 65mph in high gear
with only 1000 miles on it
Too early to give you a milage check
A couple of points on headers for added performance: Jerry Jardine in
discussions at Ukiah said that the headers are not really tuned for the low
rpm that the motor homes runs, rather designed for fit and need free flow
mufflers as has been stated. He also added that the heads should be
reworked in the exhaust ports to acheive full benefit from the reduced
restriction. IMHO the headers are only good for correcting cracked manifold
problems without the full treatment on the heads and exhaust system.
Anything less and you are not getting the full benefit of your investment.
