In the past few years we have had several discussion on the various penetrating fluids and oils to loosen nuts and bolts. we had presented the use of ATF and Acetone as a very good penetrating oil and has several papers and reports on the mixture.

I found this presentation on most of the popular oils and it is very interesting. Please view and draw your own conclusions

Magic Elixir (acetone and ATF) appears at or near the top of all the studies I've seen which include it and is substantially cheaper than the
commercial stuff, so I use it exclusively. Save your ATF when you change fluid and filter. One THM-425 full is enough to provide elixir for years.

I like this man's attention to detail. That is what makes a study like this valuable.

What does concern me a little is that the AFT he used was a synthetic and was not fully miscible with the acetone. I have always used dino ATF even
though I use synthetic in the 425. I have never seen any phase separation of the mix.

I actually have two or three of those tested on the shelf. Mostly because I had to purchase some when operating remotely. (When you need something,
you buy what you can find.) The AFT/AT MIX I have stores in a leaky pump oil can.

He is right that cost is a secondary consideration.

I used acetone and power steering fluid in a 403 that had not been run in 19 years. Bore scope showed rusted cylinder walls at the contact points of
the rings in several cylinders. I could not rotate the engine even with a 5 foot bar on the wrench. I filled the cylinders with the PSF/acetone
mixture and every day that I was at the airport I would try to move the engine. After over a week of soaking, one day I turned the wrench and the
engine turned over easily and now runs like a top. I used that mixture because of the quantity of fluid needed. I did not want to buy that much
Kroil.

Kroil works very well if you give it soaking time measured in days. In all of is tests we saw on the video the soaking time was hours and not days.
Heat with Kroil also works to accelerate the process and reduce the soaking time.

Lemme point out, cheapskate that I am, not only do I use the removed ATF for elixir, I use changed motor oil in the chain oiler on my power saw.

Johnny, be sure that there is no "chunky" stuff in the drain oil that you
put in your bar oiler. When those things get plugged up, bad stuff happens
to your drive sprocket, bar, and chain.

I think he made a mistake using synthetic ATF instead of an oil based ATF. He said the acetone did not mix well. Some of the other products were oil based products. I think that regular ATF (or just plain kerosene (which is the base stock for regular ATF would have performed better.

Yeah and the used motor oil smells way worse when it gets splattered on you
than bar oil

It's easier to tell when the reservoir is running out - the cut lightens up :)

Ok JR, you got me hooked. I started going through more of his Youtube videos and came across this.
"Is Flex Glue better than JB Weld, Gorilla & Loctite?"
I think this is even more dramatic:

A truly happy person is one who can enjoy the scenery on a detour.

Jerry,
He’s got lots of test and they are pretty detailed.

All of his ProjectFarm videos are fun to watch and seem well conceived. I figure whatever works on rusted bolts that doesn't require a torch is good
enough.
