Just got a blast mail stating that the GMCMI rally in Patterson is cancelled.
Does anyone have any updates as of why?
Scott.

Lenore and I were planning on going, and just about register. GMCMI may
have notified folk who had already signed up first. We were sure looking
forward to seeing everyone.

Darn!

Corona Virus panic?

If so, it seems a little premature and alarmist to me.

I'm of the 'well damn' opinion except at the situation not GMCMI or its Board or manager or whomever. Given that there are a few of us who are
getting older, even potential exposure regardless how light is to be avoided. It was the correct choice.

I can tell you the board spent lot of time on this issue and finally made
the decision.
Personally, I felt lot of the membership would not have attended, so it
would not have been a great one.
They could not wait on the decision as lot happens that most of your not
exposed to, but having served on the bord for over 10 years one lears how
much is done in preparation.

If this is over the virus, it is nuts. We had more people die in the tornado last week than have died in the entire country from this virus.

Oh well, I wasn't planning to attend anyway.

Which is exactly the thought process the board went through.

There’s no right answer, so best to be safe.

Just so you know - I was planning to return your decorated “picker upper” that you left at your site at the last Classics rally.
At least you know it is safe and may even get put to use before you see it next.

I'm all for being proactive and not potentially exposing people to unnecessary risks, BUT I'd guess the trip to and from the Convention would be a
much greater risk. I'm so tired of the herd mentality without real facts.
Rant off.

Howdy Mike,

As was pointed out, attendance may have been very low for the Spring rally,
and given our average ages, and our higher vulnerabilities, it is probably
better to err on the side of caution.

Skipping Patterson was certainly bouncing around “in the back of my mind"
as we were procrastinating sending in our reservations. But we are very
disappointed to miss our GMC Motorhome family’s big Spring gathering!

Enjoy using my “Quicker-Picker-Upper” whenever you’re out for a stroll.
The French company Ettore is the manufacturer, and it is absolutely the
finest M.O.O.P. stick I've ever found in over four decades of policing for

Everyone:

Now that I’m not using my thumbs to type, I can say a lot more. I was traveling, and only had my phone to use for email.

Early in discussing the impact of the corona virus, it was obvious that there were the people looking at the data (and the tiny risk), and those who had a more emotional response.

I think the turning point for many, me included, was when respected members of our community started to announce that the tiny possibility just was not worth it, and that they would not be attending the rally.

I was initially in the camp saying “hold on, it’s going to be ok”, but that changed quickly after talking to so many who decided not to “tempt fate".

There were also the financial considerations - there are a set of costs to cancelling today, more next week, and much, much more the week after.

Having the convention and low turnout would have GMCMI incurring a large loss, and it would set a low tone for the future.

Based on the number of events across so many different organizations that have cancelled since the board made the decision on Patterson, I’m firmly convinced that the right decision was made, and for the right reasons. Some of these clubs and organizations “look like us” (meaning a preponderance of grey hair), as opposed to the 20 and thirty somethings who remain completely invincible!

The last quarter of 2019 and the first of 2020 have been challenging, first with the FMCA separation, and now having to cancel a convention for the first time in the clubs history.

Once again, the board stepped up, carefully considered the facts and the feelings, and acted. Their time and talents are appreciated.

We are working on having a few online tech sessions about the time of the convention. It will be different, but will let us “meet”. Details to follow soon.

Allegedly, there is a Chinese curse that translates to “May you live in interesting times”

That we do.

Wash your hands. Be well.

Unfortunately the herd mentality is a fact of life in the current culture. Even without it, cancelling was the correct move. I look on the risk -
and as Hal says, traveling is worse than convening in my mind - as low but the payoff is high. Think checking the gascolater on the airplane you're
about to fly. The one time in a thousand it is full of water, the engine gonna quit. Ask me how I know this. (And the guy who did check it was a
Designated Examiner)

Dolph,

History will probably judge that this was the best choice.

It was not the choice for us. We dropped out plan for Patterson about a month ago and for what I believe are good reasons.
Chaumière (our coach) has not completely recovered from the excursion into the median last spring. (The 150 miles to Mansfield was not a bad bet.)
My better knee is not doing well, so my capability to deal with any issue on the road looks less good.

I will miss it, we do enjoy the travel to warn (usually) in the early spring.

We are hoping to be in shape for Rapid City.

Does anybody know if Western States is doing another fall rally in striking range?

The first rally in Rapid City was a great time for us. The Western states rally immediately following in Colorado was icing on the cake. We liked
the location better than the Rapid City fairgrounds. The Western States location in Estes Park was also great. Driving over 1000 miles one way was
worth it to attend two consecutive rallys.

Matt,
I have reached out to couple people that we would need to have from Western
States that do the hard work to see if hey might consider joining in the
International Convention.
It is still a long trip for most, but I'm hoping we can get Canadians from
the West province to attend along with the Cascaders.
