Has anyone had problems driving with the roof vents open?
Has anyone made and air scoop to for the toll booth windows?
My VIN says this is 1974, what refrigerant should I try to see if there is
any life in my dash air?

I do not drive with the roof vents open. You might open it an inch or so but I'm afraid or breaking the cover flapping in the wind. You can always
open a side window or two if you want more flow through ventilation.

The giggest thing to do on the toll window air deflector is get a set of wind wings from Blaine Merrell. Fell free to call him so you can select your
color.

Roof vents can be open a little. I wouldn't open them all the way though.
I have forgotten them and left them open and it didn't hurt anything, but I
think it eventually would.

Blaine Merrells Wind Wings is what you're looking for. They'll give you
plenty of fresh air.

Your GMC came with R12 installed. Look for a tag that indicates otherwise.
Also, the service valves are different for 134.

R12 valve is a threaded flare fitting.

All original GMC air conditioning systems used R12, which is difficult to
find and expensive when you do. You can also recharge it with Durakool,
HC12a, or whatever the current HC equivalent is. Converting to R134,
however, isn't easy.

And yes to the Wind Wings.

Mine is a 1973. Installed hoods over the roof vents after I snapped off one drag racing
with JimB. Hoods are cheap, EZ to install, and you can leave the vents open in storage and
not get rain in.

Wind wings are great and in my opinion a must.

We restored my coach 14 years ago and installed a Vintage Air that TEE'd into the R-12 dash
unit and have added only one can of R-12 in all these years.

If you would add your location and GMC model to your signature lin where
you only have John Phillips it would be handy.
Does John Shotwell have your TZE number?
Have you signed up for the "Black" list aka the GMC Assist list?

Thanks

John,

Welcome to the group, family, cult, asylum.....

You came aboard about a week ago and I missed welcoming you at that time.

You don't say how long you have owned, but that is only important so we know what history you have.

We usually run with the rear vent open about an inch.

You have been told where to source wind wings. If you can get to a work rally, there will probably be someone there that assist installing them.

About the coach air:
If it was not converted to R-134, it will still have 1/4 SAE flares at the access fittings. If it does, it is well worth your while to get and
install the adapters for R-134 because that is what is standard with HC-12 these days.
If it still has the 1/4 flare fittings then it was never charged with R-134 and that is good.
If it was changed to R-134, you can still put HC-12a into the system, but not R-12 even if you do have some.

Before you do much else though, take a cap off and poke the valve inside. If something comes out, that is great. It means the system has not inhaled
air (and moisture). If the system has no pressure in it, you should plan to buy a receiver/dryer and replace that before the final charge (attempt).

If you have no pressure in the system, you will need a vacuum pump. These can often be rented. Do not try to use the cheap air powered pump from
Hazard Fright. If it does not pull down and stay down, then get some HC-12a with dye and charge the system with at first. You will be need a UV
light to make the dye light up. When (if) you find and repair the leak, then charge the system with HC-12a such that you see about 25psi on the low
side with the engine at about 1500 (a little off idle if you don't have a tach handy.

You don't have a meaningful sigfile, but be aware that I you live in southern climes and have a pre-77 coach, the A/C will not impress you.

Speaking of sigfiles, without knowing your mail client and you working the e-mail side, I don't know the specifics, but it will help us help you more
if you build a sigfile that starts with your name has a bit about the coach (year, model and major mods) and a geographic reference so any others that
may be in striking range will know that they could provide assistance. This happens a lot in this group.

And about this group. You found your way here and that is great. You have just collected a couple thousand brand new old friends that have a very
specific agenda. That agenda is to see that you enjoy your coach as much as we all enjoy ours. This is an amazing and supportive group. You will
find your coach is not just another toy, but it connects you to a community that has resources that are more than you might have imagined. The only
other community that I know of that is like this is that of the watermen that are my world. For that reason, I like to welcome new owners here much
as a new owner or vessel is welcomed there. So,

May the Good Lord bless this coach and all those that set forth within her.

Welcome John

Matt

There are several different designs of vent covers that will allow you to open the roof air vents and not allow rain to enter the coach. They are
rigid enough to run down the road and have the vents open for a more air flow through experience. I leave my roof air vents open even when parked to
get some air exchange in the coach at rest.

My Royale has a 14 x 14 vent in the rear that has a reversible fan. Similar
to a fantastic fan but it is covered by a rear faced shroud that does not
open or close. I had my upholstery gal make a snap on cover of naugahyde
for the cold weather. We get very good ventilation by opening the toll
booth windows and running the fan on low or medium speed. 75% of the time,
that is all that is required.

John,
Go to our web site and you'll see two style wind wigs for the Toll window.
The MAXX AIR vent have duel arms and that allows one to run with vent up.
Naturally you do not want it it scoop air but vent.
Jim Bounds of Coop and I prefer the Maxx Air over the Fantastic as the
Fantastic specifically states not to run down the road with it open.
