Does anyone have good experience with a paint shop on the west coast? My wife is starting to think about making the coach pretty but I'm pretty sure
it's out of our budget. Still I'd like to call to see what it might be.

I really like the later Palm Beach paint scheme and I'd certainly have the roof painted white.

I'd love to have Jim Bounds do his magic on the coach, but that's just too far to go.

Around here the custom shops will get 6 - 10K depending the design. Painting isn't the problem.. several hundred in supplies and a day of the
painter's booth time. Prep, however, is intensive and expensive. I had a deal with a local custom shop for time and supplies plus a percentage for
profit, me to prep the coach as they wish and no guarantee the paint will stick. The option was several man - days of tech labor in prep. I swapped
the coach for the ratrod toad and didn't paint.
We used to paint airplanes at The Aircraftsman in Elmore AL, the prep is even worse than a GMC. Time, time, time to prep one. The existing paint on
an airplane has to come down to the aluminum to save weight before it's resprayed.

Strehle's Body Shop in Oakland, CA has done several GMCs, including my Stretch. Gary, the owner, used to be a GMC owner. I did not get a "take it
down to bare metal" Bounds paint job, but it is still on there after 5 years and looks pretty good.

If the [paint on it isn't peeling, you needn't take it to the metal and Fiberglas. If it's flaking or peeling it's gotta come off. The reason
airplanes are stripped is to save the ten to forty pounds or so of old paint. Since painting changes the weight and balance, we weighed them and
files a 337.
Stripping is the best way but runs the price way up. Ask bounds what he gets but realize he 'does it right', removes everything removable, corrects
any leaks, strips and then paints. It ain't cheap but it will outlive the rest of the coach most likely. Let your pocket and your pride be your
guide :)

Strehle's Body Shop website not only shows a GMC Motorhome but also an Oscar Mayer Weinermobile!

Could they have repaired a weinermobile?!

I have to visit them.

I'm thinking that you can save money by going out of the San Francisco area.
And there are more choices for paint (less restrictions on VOC compliant urethane).

I bought a half-pint of silver base coat to fix a dent on my sons car, it was $80.
And then I had to buy the gloss clear coat and hardeners. With tax it was $250.

Materials are crazy costly when it comes to paint and prep....when we were restoring cars it wasnt uncommon to see 4 to 5k in just materials
alone....i'd be surprised if paint/prep etc wouldnt run about 8 to 10k to do one of these and that wouldnt be anything fancy or stripping the original
finish.

Im actually thinking of wrapping mine instead as i think it will run a quarter of the cost but then again.....lol.

Yes the Bay Area is expensive but Sacramento isn’t far away. I have to call the place in Oakland.
