He has the city on his case about his GMC. Issue 1. He can't find the ignition key. I've never had to get the steering column lock out without the key. So he needs advice on that. Issue 2. He needs one air bag. Minimum. He needs an air bag that will stay up for most of a day. Peter. His phone # is 847-677-5550. Post if you can help. Bob Dunahugh 319-521-4891

Pretty sure he can get a key/key cylinder most places. Have to start taking column apart. Steering wheel puller, steering spring plate
compressor. He could take the cylinder out and into a locksmith for a key.

Airbag is easy, 4x4 and two lag bolts.

Sounds to me his best course of action is to get the 4x4 and pay a quick tow to wherever he can aprk it without city towing. Tow truck will not
need a key.

My memory says that to pull the lock (once past the wheel and lockplate) you need the small screwdriver to depress the tab AND the key in the lock.
But maybe key not req.??? I drove through Skokie last night too. Only a 10 min job as I have the tools but I won't be back in the city for a couple
days.

The ignition lock is an easy part to replace.
There is both an Advance and a O'Rielly's near Skokie. One, maybe both will lend the steering wheel puller and the lock plate spring compressor
usually for free but require a deposit. The only hard part is getting the lock ring off the column shaft and that can vary between a not too tough
and total bitch. Just keep careful track of the parts. The key in switch is small.

Does he have the manuals? If not, download them.

I found a U-Tube that helped me. tughten up a loose steering column, Required going down through the column to get to some really odd bolts. I have
not looked but willing to bet there are U-Tubes that will direct you on how to get to and release that lock set. JWIT

I know you knock out the pot metal tab then depress the tang with small screwdriver. But I always had key in to line up the tumblers. Can it come out
with no key?

I replaced mine in the parking lot at Autozone, many years ago. I borrowed their steering wheel puller and plate compressor. Used one socket to
remove the nut and took out the cylinder. New one with 2 keys was around $25.00 at the time and 15 minutes work. It shows in stock at a store near
me for $15.00 or $19.00 depending on color (Black or chrome). It also shows in stock at 2555 W Toughy which is 6 miles from Skokie. It is a common
GM part. Most are badly worn after 40 years and replacement is the easy way to go.

I seem to remember that there was a screw also to remove but I could be wrong.
