Outer CV Joints

This brings another point to mind regarding the outer CV's. I recall
reading somewhere(not in the service manual) that the balls and cages in
the outer CV's need to be replaced in the same relationship that they
were disassembled in. Is this correct? I know that the CV's are
manufactured as a unit and you can't swap parts between CV's, but being
sure that each ball goes back into the same slot it came out of seems to
be overkill.

Thanks for the reality check - I suspected as much. BTW, finally found
the right boot clamps at a drive shaft shop. While there I went digging
for free advice - showed them the inner CV balls and asked about the
small pits. They said "not to worry", buff them slightly and
reinstall. Finally, some good news!
