But aluminum does not rust!!!! And there have been incidences of complete
failure of steel rims where as (so far) the recalled Alcoa's only leak air and
they are being replaced at n/c by Alcoa. Try to get your money back on the
steel rims!!!

Richard: My source was a personal call to Alcoa's Customer Service Department.
The knowledgeable (sounding) lady explained the recall, how to identify the wheels
covered, and what to do. She also said that the problem was leaking of air due to
cracks. In retrospect, she did not say that there had not been catastrophic
failures but I suppose given cracks, failures would eventually take place. Anyway,
the problem was apparently due to an alloy difficulty which has been corrected
several years ago.

Dick,

I've never heard of a failure of an Alcoa no. 160231 Classic wheel on the
GMC. I've heard rumors of the Aloca LTS wheels developing cracks, but
that's an improper application.

Original wheel rims badly rusted. Just wondered if any of you would have
the old tires removed and consider knocking as much rust as possible and
smoothing (WITHOUT removing more material than necessary, repainting the
rims and reusing them? An alternative would, of course, be NEW or good
quality "previously owned" rims.
I'm a little concerned about the aluminum rims, especially in light of the
recent Alcoa recall.
Maybe it's because I'm in a heavy steel intensive business
(cranes/hoists/systems) that causes my concern about aluminum. Seen many
more failures in aluminum than I ever have in steel. I know there's a LOT
of aluminum in this coach, but it ain't working very hard. Which probably
explains why the FRAME and UNDERCARRIAGE are STEEL!

Gary, I THOUGHT I read on this BB of several catastrophic failures of
aluminum rims. If this NOT the case, please correct me.

Try to get your money back on the

The rims to which I referred were the ORIGINALS that came with the machine.

The aluminum will oxidize (blue haze) to a certain point then the process
will slow or arrest. The lighter weight of the aluminum is, of course,
another advantage.

sand-blasted -- probably OK. But I suspect you or one of the other kind
folks on the net can tell me if my rims are RADIAL TIRE CAPABLE. I'd guess
there are some unique stamping or other alphanumeric designation on them to
indicate that. I just need to know what that might be as I sure don't want
to invest any more in them if I can't run radials on them.

Scott, Just gave my rims a closer look -- and they DO NOT look all that
good. One edge of each of the rears got into the mud and the oxidation is
far more pervasive than I first thought. Was able to knock off rusted metal
and the rim is HALF its original material thickness at that point -- NOT a
good thing.
Looks like I might need to talk to you about those rims.
