Original carburetor gone

Hi all,

As part of an engine swap, my mechanic had problems getting the original carburetor rebuilt and ended up getting a rebuilt replacement. The rebuilt
part isn't the same carburetor as the original Quadrajet 7045254 model and I can tell it doesn't work quite right. I'd like to get back to a good
working product but finding a rebuilt or even the correct core has proven very difficult so far.

So if your 7045254 core is gone, what do you do?

Checking on that one now. I think I can see the numbers stamped on the casting, but I want to be sure.

Words of Wisdom on getting a carb repaired or rebuild. There are only one of two shops that can really rebuild the carbs that have the correct. Jim B has a shop that he trust and there may be others out there, but the only one that truly knows the GMC motorhome carb is Dick Paterson. It will work right out of the box.

Never, Never, Never let that original carb out of your possession or lose it, because it is different than the cars from cars or trucks. There is a very high core charge if one is available.

I only recommend ONE shop to rebuild the GMC carborators, that would be Dick Paterson.

He is doing his own work, knows the carb inside and out and has never had any problems

with any rebuilt carbs.

I am not sure if he will out right sell a GMC (specialized) carb but I know he asks for

the original body of the GMC (specialized) carb for the rebuild.

I've had bad experiences with shops that say they know carbs and screwed them up

extremely badly.

I have been to Dick and Jan's home near Barrie, Ontario, Canada, and he
allowed us to use his shop and tools to do some work on coaches that were
traveling across Canada together. His carb flow bench is an actual
GMC/Oldsmobile front clip. Every carb that he reconstructs goes on that 455
and is run and adjusted until he is satisfied with it. No better way to do
it exists in my opinion. And, I have lots of personal experience with
Dynamometers and flow benches.
He mentioned while we were there that it was a very rare happening
that both he and I were together working in the same shop collaboratively
working on a GMC. I took that as one of those rare compliments from a
legend in this business.
He is a living treasure trove of GM information, one of the Greats. He
is a true friend and his wife is a peach. We share a common love of Ford
engines that have their valves in the correct place, the block.

Jim, if you can find a pair - there were very few made - a set of Ar-Dun OHV heads will turn your flathead kitty into a wildcat. Otherwise, a set of
Offenhauser heads, dual manifold, a pair of 97s and a 3/4 cam will get it moving fairly nicely.
Duntov was making speed before GM turned him loose on the 'vette.
