Look Pa, everybody is out of step except Tom

I too was "corrected" about my knowledge in a field that I spent 10 years as
the engineer in charge of system analysis, design, development and
production. After the second "correction", I now limit my opinions off line
directly to the GMC net individual who ask the question and let them decide.
Tom aggressive responses on so many subjects has ruined the open GMCnet
forum for me.

I now look at the From Line and use the delete button accordingly. I found
that in a volunteer organizations, there is a vast difference in social
norms and some I can choose to ignore. I tend to listen more to those who
are in the business of doing things correctly. When there is a vast
difference of opinion, it usually means that there is not much difference in
the outcome if either opinion is followed. A lot of times, there is not
right and wrong way to do things, just better, worse or even equal but not
necessarily the same. When it comes to safety, I tend to follow those who
can lose a lot in litigation for a incorrect recommendation.

The GMCnet has been, and I hope will continue to be, a great information
source for me in maintaining, and sometimes improving, a 25 year old vehicle
that we have enjoyed and have become rather attached to. So far, we have
traveled 25,000 trouble free miles in the last three years and plan on
wearing out and replacing a lot of things over the next years. The GMC has
been a lot more expensive to maintain than our SOB, but the satisfaction and
pleasure has been well worth the additional cost.

A truly open forum is one where all are welcome to post and all are welcome
to take the information they wish to take. Let's all leave personal attacks,
petty squabbles and such out of this. If someone says something that is
offensive, delete it, take a walk around the block, and forget it. Losing
good people and their wealth of knowledge because of such arguments is
counter productive to this type of forum.

I want EVERYONE's opinion. Not just the polite people, not just the former
engineers....EVERYONE. We all have something to add at one time or another,
please lets all do so.

Don't anyone walk away mad because we'll all lose in the long run.

This is all related to two highly subjective criteria - the writer's
willingness or ability to tactfully present his or her view, and the
reader's sensitivity to an opposing viewpoint. Neither will ever be
universally understood or accepted by the other. Regrettably, I may have
added to the current tensions through my unfortunate choice of the word
"distasteful" in a recent post when a softer term may have been more
appropriate.

Hereafter, when I read a post that I view as lacking tact, intentionally or
not, I won't respond in kind. Instead, I'll privately consider the offender
"diplomatically challenged" and reread their post in an effort to glean
useful data.

We've all lost the benefit of some valuable past contributing experts.
Maybe if those offended by someone's comments would "consider the source"
instead of challenging the offender, the lurking experts will resume their
contributions.
