Bruce,

When I first did it, I would hook the power lead on the alternator stud. That is not easy and not very safe.
Later I would pass the power leads out to the front along the A/C line track. That is safer but a moderate PITA.
Then I made up a plug with two separated terminal for the leads to grab.
With the new dial a degree light (from HF) and the gun sight in the bell housing, I put a lighter plug (I actually hate them) right on the power cord.

Putting a lighter plug on the timing light would pretty much designate that
timing light to the GMC.
It is a pain to feed the wires over to and under to the chassis battery.

That is why I like the $4 spark tester

On every vehicle I own, I install a 40amp circuit breaker where it is handy
to access. I wire it with 12 gage stranded automotive wire. When I want to
hook up a timing light or etc. I just clip onto the circuit breaker for a
12 volt feed. Works for me. I use them to jumper the starter solenoid to
remote crank engines, also. I use a remote starter switch that you just
pull the trigger on for jumpering the solenoids.
