I sold mine last year for $550.00. It had 5?? hrs on it since its last rebuild. ~5000 hrs on it total. I think
I did very well. That is also in Canadian dollars. About $100 to you guys down south. Seriously, about $350.00
US. Replaced it with a Microlight 2800watt. Good enough for 1 AC and about 1000 left over. Only weighs 113 lbs
though. When you take out the 6000 make sure you have it well supported. It weighs about 500 lbs. Darren

After all I've spent much more then $25 on on mine
and it still doesn't run for crap! But it does sort of run.

I am however getting very tempted to throw mine into
the pond out in the back of my place and let the fish
live in it.

Have your replaced the condenser yet - My 4 kw Onan
drove me crazy with an intermittent problem - that was
finally cured when I replaced the condenser. It would
run for a while then start to run very rough (as the
condenser started to fail when the unit got warmer)

Just an opinion, your original onan in good condition
is priceless. When the 6000w Onan genset provided in
our motorhomes was new to market the standard sales
pitch involved balancing a nickle on edge on top of
the running unit, it would not fall over. I am not
aware of any current production generator that can
achieve equal quietness and smoothness while running,
partially because most new units are alternators not
generators and run at 3600 RPM rather than 1800 RPM. I
am planning on doing a full rebuild on mine sometime
this summer. I could be wrong here but if I am I'm
sure someone will correct me.

I hear you, mine is the same way. I repaired the oil leaks, plugs &
points etc., pulled the lugs off the control board & cleaned them.
Everything was great but it didn't last. It doesn't use or leak a drop
now but has started to run poorly again. Will not start or stop from
remote.....runs along fine then the rpm dips just enough to shut down
the Statpower 40, then picks up again. Beats me, I guess I'll start all
over again. Noisy piece of junk too!
I was looking at (shame on me) new motorhomes a few weeks ago & felt
something touching my pants leg. I looked down to see what it was and
it was exhaust pulses from a genset. Couldn't hear it or feel any
vibrations! Now there's a genset! Grumble, grumble,
grumble.........I'll fix the da** thing again!

Make sure all the connectors at the coil are clean and tight
My 6kW Onan developed a starting/running problem a few days after I bought
the coach; I have recipts from the PO for hundreds of Dollars worth of Onan
repairs - one of the little push-on wire connectors at the coil was loose, I
fixed it and now the Onan starts and runs great.
I hope your problem is as easy to solve!

Thanks for the advice Peter,
mine runs when started locally, no start from remote. It's most likely
the connections that are causing the starting from remote problems but
the one that concerns me is the sudden dips in rpm after it's been
running a while. Darn Thing.

i bought new brushes and a bearing. how hard is it to replace the brushes? do i hsve to file them down or anything like that?

load. I have rebuilt the carburetor, new fuel and air filter, plugs,
points, condenser, etc.. I've given up on the local fools at the
Cummins/Onan store, they are helpless. Any ideas would be appreciated...

I had problems big time with my Onan. What it would do is surge under changes
in electrical load. It got so bad that one day while I was driving and had
folks watching TV in the back, someone used the microwave to fix a snack. When
the micro shut down, the Onan's RPM (and voltage) surged. It got so high that
it blew out the microwave and caused smoke to pour out of a surge protector
that I connected to the TV. I had an AC voltmeter on the line that I glanced
at when the smoke starting coming out of the surge protector and it was pegged
at 140 volts. So who knows maybe I had in excess of 200 volts coming out of
the Onan?

Obviously a governor problem. I resolved to replace all the easy part of the
governor, which included the governor ball joint and spring. I also changed
the points, plugs and spark plug wires. After doing all this, I started it up
and applied varying loads. BINGO! The problem has gone and now I have a Onan
that runs like it probably did when new 25 years ago! That was about 5 Onan
hours ago and I am pretty sure if it was going to happen again, it would have
by now.

After inspecting the ball joint I found that I could turn it in such a way that
it would bind. I believe this binding caused the inconsistent RPM under
changing electrical loads condition. I don't know about the spring, but the
Onan manual suggested replacement if there were lingering problems. Don't be
fooled by what appears to be a free moving governor arm when the Onan is not
running. My governor arm seemed nice and free when I wiggled it. But
apparently it would bind sometimes when the Onan was running.

This solution may not fix your problem, but I've been meaning to write this
down for a few weeks anyway.

Mine does the same thing. I have done all of the things you have. On mine,
it happend often enough that I am able to put a timing light on it and when
it falters, it also loses spark. The work around that I am currently using
is to jumper good +12vdc from pin 5 of the board to the plus side of the
coil. I have it switched with the switch in the coach. Crude, but I have to
have a gen and I refuse the temptation to buy a new one just because I have
a bad connector or relay or something.

Jumper yours just to see if you have the same problem.
