Onan won't start (was 911 Call - Help)

I used the hot wire to the coil and it cranked right up. I then removed
the wire and it continued to run. I then killed it and cranked it normally
from the remote start switch with no problem. Just now went out ( about 24
hours later) and it cranked just fine! I'm confused. What good did the
hot wire do for that moment that it doesn't require it any more? Is
something getting old and just needed a little kick start? Is it apt to
happen at random again?

Onan won't start (from remote or at genset) without jumping 12v to the
coil, then runs great as long as I leave the hotwire in place.
