Fellow GMCers
Disabling the Onan Voltage Regulator is highly desirable for Onan Control
Operation. The VR is not needed or desired for operation of the Control
Board/Onan. It should have been disabled by GM back in the 73/74 when
they combined the Rear Battery to an Onan/House Battery. When the VR
fails, it will load down the Flywheel Alternator voltage to the point
where the control board will not allow the Onan to run. The word has
been out to the GMC community for some tine now. However, I have been
getting feedback that the wires are being "CUT" at the VR & afterward the
Onan will not start. Cutting/removing the single wire attached to one of
the VR terminals is OK. However, the two wire attachment to a single VR
terminal must be disconnected at VR & maintained as a common wire
connection for the Control Board to receive the proper Run Signal (this
connection provides the Bias/field excitation for the Flywheel
Alternator). If you have not made this modification....NOW IS THE TIME
(preventive maintenance).
