Onan starter

I discovered that the problem with my 4000 Watt Onan is that the heavy
lead coming out of the solenoid and going through the starter case is
broken. When I disconnectied it to clean the terminals, it came off in
my hand. Just the connector to attach the line to the solenoid and about
1 inch of line. I'm going to try to get the starter off with out taking
too much off the engine but if I remember correctly, the manual says to
remove a bunch of stuff. At least it isn't a major engine problem.
Strange but the wire broke with the coach sitting in my drive way. I
started the Onan a few times after buying it in January but haven't had
it on the road except for a 10 mile trip.Guess it was just time for the
wire to break. Better in my driveway than on a long trip.

Also, I'm just about finished with the posts to mount my shoulder
harnesses but I would like to take off the plastic cover below the
driver's side windows. I've undone the screws along the base but don't
want to pry too hard for fear of breaking something. Am I missing some
fasteners which must be undone or is there some other trick?

Ralph I am redoing a coach for travelling now also. Am interested in the
shoulder harnesses. what kind are they and how will they be mounted?

Ralph was so anxious to hear of the shoulder harnesses that I didn't attempt
to answer your first question. Don't know if you have the illustrated parts
breakdown for the couch but index 23.080 is confusing when you check the
picture to the finish and fitting list. The picture shows 4 screws (18 X
1/2) in the bottom of the panel, there are 4 holes in the front of the panel
(no screws shown), but should be able to be reached either through the
fenderwell of the or maybe the front passenger door assy. Haven't got my
coach here at the house so can't verify it. It also shows 4 holes in the
rear of the panel for 4 each 18 X3/4 screws (item 13 on the list). Hope this
helps. In my experience if it does not come off easily, find out why?
could save a lot of money.

Thanks to anyone who might be working to provide me with some
information about my Onan 4KW starter problem but I just found a new
unit at Golby's for $201 plus shipping so I'm just glad that I didn't
have to junk the whole unit. A local Onan distributor could get one from
the warehouse in a week or so but their price was $223 plus shipping.

Ralph,

Some of those Onan starters are identical or very similar to a
certain foreign car starter. Mitsubishi comes to mind. That might be a
way to get a rebuilt starter instead of buying a complete new one.
