onan starter running on

I have been working on and off on a stubborn Onan for a year with someone. The dang starter cranks, and will not let go. Luckily he has a
disconnect on the battery.

it does not do that everytime, but most times.

Things that have been tried:

clean the switch on his onan board.(thought it got better- but was proven wrong)

I then started cannibalizing my onan, that always worked fine.....

installed the K-1 relay off my Onan. No change. - went through all the photos and wiring diagram to verify the wiring to the K-1 was
correct.(found no issue)

installed my control board - no change

installed my starter- no change. the original starter did show some corrosion, and worst shape then mine. but once we installed mine, it still ran
on.

tried to visually check the starter bracket- do not see anything wrong. Have not removed the starter bracket...

pulled the tin off, and checked the flywheel. cleaned up the teeth on the flywheel(some rust), greased the teeth and the starter teeth.

still persisting on the starter running on.

what next?

Checkthe relay on the starter next.

There is sometimes an easy fix for this especially when putting on another starter. I have done this for a couple of people and solved their problem.
Sometimes the starter gear will not release properly from the ring gear. This sounds like your problem. If you put a couple of thin washers between the starter and it’s mount on the end toward the ring gear it will tilt the starter to give a bit more clearance when the starter gear is extended and will allow it to release when you let go of the start button. If that doesn’t work try putting in thicker washers but it usually doesn’t take much.

Sounds like you need a new control board.

Stop throwing parts! Trouble shoot. Pull the thin wire when it happens. If it quits it's on the board side. If not the starter is mechanical
sticking. Both old may have grit and dried grease. A lite film of Synpower fixed mine for good.

If you are afraid to stick your hand in there with it running, Wire a small 12 volt lamp across the solenoid terminal and ground. Light on when it is
grinding say it is electrical. Off it is mechanical. You could even stick the wire and bulb out through the air vent and not even have to open the
door to see the bulb.

sometimes swapping a part out is quicker then troubleshooting. Especially if what you are troubleshooting is not consistently failing.

I will try to remember the trigger wire test for future.

Here is what where we are at with this onan: We swapped in what i thought should of been a good starter from my onan that is sitting on a cart. I
have never had any problems with it cranking or running on. In Ed's onan, the problem persisted. It was better- not running on everytime, but most
times. He brought his old starter to our local re-builder, and 2 hours later, and $70 poorer, the re-builder said there was a few issues with the
starter. Ed installed his starter and it is now starting and disengaging perfectly every time. Looks like if my onan ends up in another coach, I
should probably have the starter re-built.

Now he has a perfectly running Onan, but claims no power. So tonight I will go and hopefully have better luck with his then I did with mine on the
power generation side.
