I never understand what "cranks but won't run" means.
Be specific. The starter turns it but it won't fire. Or the starter turns it and it sputters and dies. The word "crank" should never be used to talk
about starting an engine. It is ambiguous. Could mean the starter turns the engine and no combustion at all, or the starter turns it and it sort of
tries to run but dies.
If it sputters and dies, it is a fuel problem or a board problem, not an ignition system problem.
Even if it won't fire, it might just be a dry intake and no gas at all getting to the cylinders. It might be getting spark but no gas.
You need to figure out if it is no spark OR no fuel/air getting to the cylinders.
Get a can of starting fluid. Take the air filter off. Jumper pin 5 to pin 9 and wait for the fuel pump to slow/stop ticking.
If the fuel pump never slows or stops, it is not getting gas from the tank to the carb. Could be low gas in the tank, fuel line leaking and letting
air in, or a bad fuel pump.
Once the fuel pump slows or stops, press the starter and, while the engine is spinning ,spritz some starting fluid into the carb air intake. If it
sputters or tries to run, you have a carburetor problem, not an ignition problem.
That is assuming it has compression. I have never heard of lack of compression on an Onan, but it is a possibility.
If it runs with pin 5 jumpered to pin 9, there are some more tests to run to make sure the flywheel AC voltage is getting to pin 8 or the oil pressure
sender is working and pin 12 is getting what it needs.
Post back when you figure out what is keeping it from running - spark, air/fuel mix, or board problem.
