Onan runs only when Start is depressed

My Onan has been running just fine but now a problem has cropped up. When I
depress the start switch, it turns over and fires up as usual. But as soon
as I take my finger off the "start" switch it dies. It will run only so long
as I hold down the switch. ???????

same thing happened to me, I replaced the board on mine(had a spare) and
cured the problem.

Patrick,

I've been packing a hard copy of Duane's excellent handout ever since I saw
it on-line, and now it appears that I will have to plunge into it.

So far all I know is that the Onan runs when I bypass the control board by
placing a jumper across terminals 9 & 5. Do you know if it's OK to run the
Genset this way so long as I monitor oil level, or does this jumper leave
the starter engaged?

My problem persists even when I disconnect the remote switch and try the one
mounted on the control board.

Richard,

I would only use the jumper for testing. As Duane notes in his handout,
the starter doesn't disengage with it on. Duane's on the digest and
will probably chime in when he reads your first note. His direct email
