onan removal

For those who have removed the onan, what was the preferred method?

I see that you can basically install and eye bolt, and lift it up with a cherry picker. Looks like Jim Bounds lifts them from the bottom with a
scissor lift thing:

I also wondered if a ATV/motorcycle jack would work.

what is easier? Any other pointers?

I am pulling it to clean up the compartment, fix the 110v power(hoping for bad connector or bridge rectifier). I have access to a cherry picker,
and I think I can get a scissor table like jim is using.

Jon,

I used the eye bolt/cherry picker method. I removed the entire mount and everything, which put the whole thing off balance. You will not need to do
that, I don't think, to just get the generator/engine unit out. Of course, label all the wires you disconnect so you can get them back together
easier.

Check the generator brushes for wear while you have it out. They are likely original.

One of mine was worn down to about 1/8" on one side and the copper connecting wire was riding on the slip ring.

I rolled mine out on a motorcycle jack. I had to build a plywood road on my
gravel driveway to do it.

Jon,

I have done it several ways.
A hook from the top is nice because it will have a very hard time sliding off the hook.
The motorcycle lift was OK, but the three scissor jacks on a pallet dolly was scary and it did work.
Just remember, if you run into a 4kW BF, they don't undo the same way as the 6kW NH.

I use a cherry picker style engine hoist to pull it all the way out and set it on a four wheel furniture dolly from Freight, Harbor. I think it was
ten bucks all up, and rated for about 500 pounds, which has so far been sturdy enough. The dolly is way easier to move it around the
shop.
