Turned out to be simple adjustment problem. Details:
First, he found the ring around the brushes dirty. Cleaning that brought
no-load voltage up to 120. But when under load, it still dropped to 95
(according to his digital multi meter).
Next, he found that the governor was not picking up the demand properly.
He adjusted that and got it to hold at about 112 volts under load.
Finally, he adjusted the carburetor, bring the voltage up to 130 with no
load and 119 with the A/C and furnace going.
His conclusion; with the governor failing to pick up the increased
current demand, the ring around the brushes (commutator?) got dirty (hot)
trying to supply voltage.
Unfortunately, I forgot to ask how the governor and carburetor could
have gotten out of adjustment.
One less item on the "get ready for Newport" list.
