Onan oil filter

Good Morning all,
I've changed plugs,checked fuel line and air filter, And switched to Mobil 1
and replaced the onan oil filter with a Fram 2870A for our first dry dock
trip to Powell Lake. My question, The fram filter now scrapes the onan
housing sides and even touches while onan is fully in, It does not fit
completely in housing oil filter hole looks to be lightly touching. Has
anyone had a leak at filter due to this rubbing? Thanks for any info

Yes, you will very likely get a leak if the filter touches while the Onan=20
is running or if you are not careful when closing the drawer. The aluminum=
=20
filter mount is bolted to the motor mount which is bolted to the engine=20
with the same two bolts. There is a lot of leverage on the filter mount and=
=20
a small surface area contacting the motor mount. The forces cause the=20
filter mount to deform and leak. If your filter is rubbing while the Onan=20
is operating you may have bad motor mounts. I had that problem and new=20
mounts fixed it. If you are careful to press the drawer to one side when=20
opening and closing the rubbing problem should not cause leaks. But if its=
=20
touching when the Onan is operating you will probably get a leak. Its very=
=20
hard to tell where the leak is coming from. The filter mount is in an area=
=20
where there is a lot of high speed air flow. The leaking oil gets blasted=20
all over and you cant tell exactly where its coming from.

Thanks Dave,

Guess I'll check the motor mounts, The Fram 2870A I got has that grip
surface at the end of it, Was hoping that added surface was causing it to
rub alittle more. Are you using an onan filter? Looked at several filters
that was listed on Gene's site and they all were about the same size, If my
mounts are OK guess I'll get the smaller Onan filter. No leaks yet and don't
want any!!

Yes, I have always used the 2870 oil filter and Mobile-1 in my Onan.

There is not very much clearance.

Hi Rick,

I guess I didn't push Onan in all the way, when I checked filter clearance.
I have about 1/16+ of a gap now so guess its ok. But I like your prefit
adjustment!!!! Might have to get me one of them preadjusters.

Caution: If you are planning to use a plain auto filter in place of the
Onan model, be advised, that the Onan engine does not have a built-in valve
that bypasses the oil filter in the event that the it becomes "clogged".
The by-pass valve is made into the filter itself. Thus the "inflated" price
of the Onan part. Most auto filters do not have this bypass valve. So use
the standard filter with care....

I went to my local authorized Onan dealer last Friday, and they told me the
latest Onan oil filter is P/N 122-0800 for my 6 kw genset. Don't know if
this fits the 4 kw model, but I paid $7.70 for it, which I didn't think was
bad, especially after I read the post about the built-in bypass valve.
(Hope this one still has it!)
 
AZ sell the Deutsch brand the number is D484. That's what I have
installed on the last oil change.
