Mark,

When mine developed a hole last year I ordered one from the Onan dealer in
Indy. I don't recall the name but could probably find it if you need it.
The muffler they sent didn't even come close to fitting so I returned it.
Mine just had a hole at the bend in the pipe and the rest was fairly good
so I just ended up brazing a patch. It's held so far but a replacement is
on my to do list.

My first look around didn't turn up anything common. I was also told that
some of the lawnmower guys could bend pipe that size but didn't find anyone
that actually could do it. I would assume some of GMC suppliers would have
it but I didn't pursue it that far. Anyway I don't recall anybody posting
a solution but I'm also interested in what you find.

I also did the tear down and clean the head thing. It was very dirty and
overheating so I suggest you check yours out thoroughly.

Since we got our GMC, it's had an interesting muffler on the Onan.

I won't be too descriptive, but its a strange looking affair that hangs
under the genset with the exhaust tip extending to behind the rear bumper.
Let your mind wander if you want...

Anyway, I know Scott asked about a replacement muffler awhile back, but I
can't find any replies to his question so I'll ask again...

Does anyone know of a compact, quiet muffler for the 6k that doesn't cost an
Onan premium price?

Do any of the lawn/garden tractor - golf cart applications have a suitable
substitute?

Anyone? Anyone?

Dick/Mark:

It just dawned on me now, that you may want to contact Worth Harmon,
614-862-8437 in Baltimore OH. His son, also a GMC owner, has a shop in
Dayton OH, I believe, that makes a nice stainless steel replacement muffler
and piping for the Onan. Prices aren't cheap (e. g. ~$175 last I new for a
complete replacement kit), but ss won't rust away either.

Mark,
Try something from a motorcycle or ATV. Especially a 4 cycle built for
trails that should do the trick for spark arrestor too... (for what it's
worth).

Good advice AND , if you intend to camp in national forests or BLM lands
a spark arresting muffler, in good condition, is required.........
