Scott,

I don't remember if that thing had to come out to get it apart, but I
remember trying to loosen something that had a reverse socket like hole on
our Onan. We ended up welding a bolt into a socket and using the bolt head
to fit into the hole to loosen it. I think we realized afterwards that the
3/8 or 1/2 (can't remember) square drive on the ratchet or extension would
have fit into the hole as well.

We did this right after we first got our GMC. An animal had apparently
built a nest in the Onan. We were running it on the way home to test it
out. All of a sudden the Onan started smoking. Luckily, shutting it off
stopped everything and we didn't do any damage. We did have to replace the
stator which is where the animal nest had been.

I love mine. I leave it dirty. Just change oil when needed and attend to
plugs etc. When it dies I'm going to find a suitable alternate use for it.
You did have a few good suggestions.
