Well, I finally got around to starting the
generator. ( 4000 watt Onan ). I replaced
the gas line, Hooked up the jumper cables.
Then hooked up the bypass jumper to turn
on the fuel pump. It started right up. Had
been sitting since 1987!!!! Sounds good. Only
now its not generating power. No 110 current
inside. Any Ideas????
Thanks,
Rob Teed
Also,
Whos in Okemos,Mi ????
I talked to You a few months ago...Computer
crashed. Lost Your Number. Im in Lansing

Simple stuff first. Shut down unit. Goto breaker; continuity to ground,
Open? Yes, goto continuity through breaker. Yes? check w/ J Bounds. Sounds
like a knowledgable guy to me.

Obvious question: circuit breakers on?
I finally got my Onan 6000 started, but the idle seemed to go up & down for
the first 15 minutes.

Rob:

Another obvious question: my 78 Royale, for instance, has an outlet
that the shore power cord must be plugged into in order for the
generator power to be routed to the coach interior.

By the way Bob, the one your looking for in Okemos is Tom Clarke if I'm
not mistaken. I'm in Kalamazoo though and Battle Creek by day.

Yep,
Had The Power cord plugged in and checked
all the Breakers. Im going to rig up a
Contunity light and check for power at
the onboard circuit breaker.

Maybe even more simple than the simple stuff....Is the generator plugged in
to the female plug in the water-electrical cord cabinet?......Jim Davis

Yes, I checked that. Could it be the bridge rectifier?

My rectifier was bad, after I washed the unit. Cost me $8. I also cleaned my
commutator and brushes, they were sticking. I had a reading of 5V AC with
the bad rectifier. Have you used a meter on the system ?

Hi Jim,
No...I havent got access to a meter Yet. Come
to think of it, One of My friends has one. Guess
I'll have to borrow it. Are You saying that You
washed the unit which caused the rectifier to go bad?
Thanks, Rob Teed

Rob,
My 4KW Onan didn't run when I got it. No fuel. I cleaned the fuel system.
Then too much fuel, bad needle & seat, parts missing. Then it ran, only it
died when I kicked on the overhead A/C. New points, that was a challenge.
Runs great. Looks like the job's finished. Give it the first bath of its
life. Then no power. It was only making 5V AC, not 115V AC. Cleaned dirty
commutator, repaired sticking brushes & broken or loose terminals. Ohmed out
breaker and everything else. Found bad (shorted) rectifier bridge. That's
where the $8 came in. Finally I used a frequency (Fluke 78) meter to dial in
the RPM to 60 Hz. I have a hard time believing that washing it would wipe
out the rectifier, but it did. I still let it warm up before hitting it with
the big load, but now "momma" can fire it up from inside the coach. When
she's happy and we're happy. BTW I used the NET for a lot of advise on what
to do. You'll have to choose what's wrong & what's right for your situation.

I bought the replacement rectifier at a local Detroit area electronics store
called Tel-Van Electronics. It is not a rare part. I did , however have to
remove the plastic holder and mount the component directly. The terminals
are configured wrong. It is a 25Amp 1000V spike. I didn't try Radio Shack,
but they may have one.
