Onan Experts?

We are trying to invoke action from the Onan 6000 in my 78 Royale.

We are not getting fire to the plugs, even when tapping direct to the
battery.

Can anyone tell us what is the point gap? . . .

. . . and what else to check?

BTW, where do I source stainless "wheel simulators" for the factory 16.5
steel wheels?

My tires are near new, but the wheels are not.

There is not much different on this points ignition that any other one you have ever seen.
EXCEPT:
1. There is no iignition resistor
2. This is a wasted spark ignition so both plugs fire at the same time.
3. Both plugs are in SERIES with each other so and one side will prevent the other side from firing. Do not try to crank it with the opposite plug
disconnected. One open wire or plug will kill both sides from firing.

A quick way to insure integrity of the wires and secondary of the coil is with the power off, disconnect both plug wires and put on ohmmeter across
the two. You should get a reading other than open I think it would be around 15 K to 20 K but anything the K range will do. If it is open then go
find your bad plug wire or coil.

More hints to follow. A lot of people here have Onan experience. Just ask away.

Ken,

Your wisdom would have saved us a lot of time. The three old (not so wise)
men tinkering with this lump tried to find a spark with a plug wire
disconnected using the old "screwdriver" short that used to work on '57
Chebbies, Ford tractors and the odd motorcycle. We did not the benefit of
your input at the time.

However, we finally we cleaned the points and the old lump roared to life.
We tweaked the carb as per our experience and Jim's phone guidance, under
load.

I am in awe of the quality and speed of assistance from the list.

Jay,

Now that you know it lives, I will suggest that you look around for the mod to put a Pertronix on the fly wheel. The set up for the ignition points
was kind of shaky 48+ years ago. It was so bad even then that the manufacturer had to retard the timing to keep it from becoming dangerously
advanced.

My actual advice, get all the parts and tools. Run it for a while and then install the modification. Now restart it and be amazed at how smoothly it
runs and how well it holds load.

You got it running and that is what counts. Cleaning the points and stopping the engine with the points open then using a jumper wire with a couple
of alligator clips across the points to electrically short and open them was going to be my next diagnostic suggestion.

You got it going. Great .
