This was handed out at the Albuquerque Rally. The person giving the
presentation said to just call them when I got home and the Rally discount
would still be honored. I haven't ordered mine yet but intend to when I
remember during business hours.

Update your onan generator with ELECTRONIC IGNITION AT 10% OFF

ELECTRONIC IGN. KIT - $108.81

IGNITION ASSY. BASE - $12.51

I'll try to post their installation handout after work tonight.

You only need the new base plate if your points type ignition is the old
design. It's about 2" x 3". The new design is about 1" x 3".

I love an upgrade as well as the next guy! After all part of my business
(computer stuff) is based on upgrades. But. before I jump into this, can
anyone tell me why I need to upgrade the ignition in my 24 year old Onan.
Will it be faster starts? A smoother running engine (my Onan RPM surges
frequently)?

Richard,

I will say this and I do not modify to the electronic unit as a rule:

The OEM point set up is a #@!*& to get to and adjust. Any mod from that
would be an improvement.

I usually install a new style point set with an easy to adjust point gap.
I like points because of their simplicity and you are right in asking why
to change technology after so many years of faithfull service.

I know people who have made the change and are very happy, I know many more
that have points even the old style set up and feel very comfortable with it.

Jim,
Thanks for the response.

I guess I'll stick with points for a while as I just bought a set a few
weeks ago when I was at the Onan store buying some other stuff.

I didn't install them yet and wondered if I should take them back
and get the electronic version.

It be faster starts than bad/worn/misadjusted points, and longer last too!

|A smoother running engine (my Onan RPM surges frequently)?

Uh --- not unless your surging is caused by bad/worn/misadjusted points now.
More likely, have your carb re-built and make sure your choke is working and
adjusted.

There seemed to be a place that was recommended for Onan, prince of darkness
carb rebuilds. I carefully did my own, it needed a new float. I got my parts
from John Deere, they were cheaper than genuine Onalaska gold.

Personally, onan points are difficult to set. Conversion makes that problem
go away.

Now ... at no extra charge, here's the carb post:

PS --
And remember -- don't start the onan with it slid out unless you support the
a** end of the starter. It will break the starter mount. This is especially
true if you're changing/setting the points.

Emery --

Maybe I was just un-lucky. Reading the collected wisdom of the 'net, now I
wonder. I do know that while doing the conversion to electronic ignition, my
mount broke (or was partially/broken already). I hit the start button on the
Onan, and the starter mount broke/finished breaking.

I looked at the mount, and concluded it was pot-metal. Got the Ragusa mount
and that was the end of my problems. I think I'll go look and see if my tray
is shiny as Heinz suggests. Surely those big donut mounts could have sagged,
stressed the mount and cracked it. I know that it busted while cranking and
made a heck of a racket as the gear ground away at the teeth on the
flywheel.

I stand corrected on my faulty theory of mount breakage.
Glad to see it's just a myth.

In thinking through it, I guess it would seem logical that the mount would
break from pressure of the starter pinion against the flywheel, which would
be upward on the tail of the starter motor.

To tell the truth, I don't even think about it with the Ragusa mount. I
think the starter mounting ears would break first. I also don't run much
with the gen extended, never thought about it.

Emery, is this the same electronic ignition that you told us about a couple of
months ago?

Thanks Emery,

I spoke with a partsguy at Cummins SW and without a model number he didn't
have a clue. Did anyone get the name of the guy from CSW that was at the
rally? I got the sense that getting the price honored might be tough with
the partsguy I spoke with.

I also spoke to parts. He at least knows who was the field guy at the
rally. He promised to call me back. When I have the official "how to do it
and get the right price" information I'll post it (if someone doesn't beat
me to it).

His name was Earl Blackard and the supervisor at Cummins was Jim French.
Numbers are Kit P/N 160-1376 and base plate 160-1219 for onan with points on
side. You dont need the base plate unles your points are on the side.
