G'day.....

And yet another adventure in GMC land. Has anyone come up with a
cross reference for the Onan (6k) air filter, GM part number 710391
(from the parts book). I believe the Onan number to be 140-1229.

Dimensions are appprox. O.D. 2 7/8, I.D. 1 11/16, and 5 7/8
high.

Local dealer wants $51.87+tax. I can't decide how many I should
order :)

Thanks
Mikeb

I recently picked up an oil filter at NAPA. They had no trouble crossing
the oil filter but couldn't cross the one for the air. I would also like to
see a cheaper or better replacement.

During my recent trials in the Black Hills when I was checking out the
generator I found that air filter had vibrated loose. So keep this in mind
when doing routine checks.

My generator gets very dusty amd dirty and this time there was especially a
lot of dust around the filter. I've always thought the paper filter was
inadequate for the application but haven't looked into any alternatives.
This would be a good candidate for one of the old fashioned oil bath
filters like my old tractor uses but the ones I've seen are much too large.

Also whenever I drive across gravel the blower exhause kicks up a huge cloud
of dust. This is probably the source of the dust on the generator and air
cleaner. Has anyone worked out different shrouds to minimize this? Either
the dust cloud needs to be eliminated or clean air should be routed to the
air intake.

Mike:
Here is a tip for additional filtering. Cut a piece of 1/4 inch foam that
will go around your paper filer. You have to glue the two ends to form a
tube shape. Then slip this foam filter over your paper filter. If it is
loose fit slip some rubber bands around to hold in place. Then all you have
to do is remove it, wash it out when and reinstall. You'll get more than
double the useage out of the paper filter.

The air exit from the generator blows straight down to the ground. I also
noticed that the warm air from the generator travels under the coach to the
front. I made a small right angle duct to fit the air exit. I had to trim
some of the door on the coach after the duct was installed. Now the air
exits outboard and not straight down.

Bob,

What you've done sounds similar to my thoughts. I finally got everything
bolted back together this evening but then I had sheet metal rubbing the
flywheel so it's in pieces again. The starter bracket that I made is
slightly thicker than the original and the sheet metal is warped with quite
a bit of oil can effect. It's close enough that it starts quiet then rubs
as it warms up. I haven't been able to figure a cure yet but hope to finish
in the morning.

I'm thinking that mine is not only kicking a lot of dust into itself but is
also recirculating a lot of the heat. When you did yours did you find it to
be both cleaner and cooler?

Dick I had the same problem with the sheet metal rubbing the flywheel.
What I did was loosen the all the bolts in the front and move the complete
unit until the rubbing stops. Then tighten them. I used a small hydraulic
jack in different locations under the generator. This is a trail and error
situation. So don't give up. When you remove the front cover from the
flywheel end you notice the frame rails become slighted twisted due to the
weight of the generator. Now if I have to remove the front cover I support
the unit with a board under the oil pan to help it twisting.

The unit doesn't appear to run cooler except I don't have the heat directed
under the coach plus there is less dust when moving over dirt roads. It
will run cleaner.

Bob.
