Got here about two hours ago. With 45 to 55MPH side winds in New Mexico on Interstate 40 for a day. Head on winds was the hardested. The GMC handled it extremely well. Jim K just looked at the pump for his thoughts. The general thought seems to be from those here. That the ball bearing in the pump locked up. And the belts had the grip to twist off the wreaked shaft at the ball bearing race. Thinking of installing a needle bearing pump here before leaving. Bob Dunahugh

Sounds like a good plan from here.

Those cross winds in NM can be relentless. Was S to N last time and had the wheel cranked like 30 deg thinking since the tires are pointing there, but
I'm going somewhere else, that must equal some tread wear.

We had a VW van in Oklahoma. You simply tack into the wind, and every time a truck passes, untack for the bow wave and then turn the wheel back 90
degrees.

I would suspect the driver of a Corvan would certainly agree!

Ha - actually my MH's are GMC's, have always admired the Ultravan but don't own one.
My Corvan is a Panel van w/ conversion interior. Other Vairs are Rampside, Rampside converted to flatbed, L M 2 Dr hardtops, L M convertibles, and 2 LM Fitch Sprints.
Considering selling off a few Vairs in the near future plus the best of my 3 GMC MH's as just don't have enough storage room for all this beloved Detroit Iron!!!

Nothing like a swing axle vw microbus or kombi in cross winds. Makes a worn
out GMC seem stable. I had a swing axle 1964 40 hp bug and a fully
articulated double cab kombi, a 1969. Both of them would get your attention
in the Columbia River Gorge with the wind blowing 50 +.
Kinda like combat. There are no atheists in foxholes, only recently
born again Christians. (Grin)

Our first ever new car was a 62 Monza coupe (maroon) with the "big" engine that was not a turbo. Wife was driving on Route 66 in Illinois while I napped. When I awoke, we were rolling 720 degrees and car landed on its wheels. Rear glass popped out and but windshield and roof held. We were on our way to Maher AFB in Sacramento for my next USAF assignment. Should have just continued on our way, but bought a 62 Pontiac Tempest Lemans with 1/2 a 389 V8, 10+ compression ratio, Quadrajet carb. Only had made 4 payments on the new Monza.

Traded that in on a 64 1/2 Mustang coupe with 289 and 4 on floor that I finally sold in 93.

Wish I could find a nice convertible with the later suspension at a reasonable price.
