The mag was GMCMM, a fairly recent issue I think. I'm at work, so I can't
dig into my "library".

It was in the 8-99 issue of GMC Motorhome Marketplace.

Starting Problems Of The 455 CID Kind
Hank Polvado
Ft. Sumner NM

......snip........

Since the 40s, my family has driven Oldsmobiles, in the late 60s we
purchased a 98 with the high compression engine. In less than 200 miles we
burned out our first of 3 starters in the 120K life of the car. I learned
two lessons very quickly. 1. Never start the engine quickly after running
the engine hard. 2. Lubricate the rear starter bearing (bushing) regularly
and often.
Even with the lower compression engines that we're using today this
lesson still applies-- if you wish to keep your engine starting properly.

There was an article in Hot Rod, Truckin GMCMM or one of the other mags
just about this problem. From what I can remember, you must remove the
starter and lube the rear bearing. There was an adapter to drill out so
you could lube that bearing from the outside from then on. Apparently
that has been a problem with the Olds starter for over the years. I
will keep looking for the article. I don't throw away magazines. In
fact I am getting so many I don' know what to do with them , to keep
them in order by Articles or their covers for filing. Chuck
