From Keith's description, it sounds like what happened to Dave Roberts. In his case, the trans coupler between the FD and trans broke with a loud
bang. No gear including park worked. Might be worth looking at.

Would the final drive be a cause of the split? Should i have it checked out?

Manny told me once that if the pinion bearings in the final drive fail,
that it nearly always takes out the transmission as well.
