Ernest mentioned shelf life for gear lude. I buy my engine oil by the 55 gal barrel for my personal use. As I have it made up to my own specs. The manufacture of the barrel of oil. Told me that if the oil is kept at a constant temp, and sealed air tight. The oil will be fine for up to 6 years. As after that age. The additives that are added. Start to break down. And finally become the base stock that comes out of the ground. If gear lube additives age in the same way. This is something that needs to be looked into as to the useable life of gear lube additives. Bob Dunahugh

A while back we looked into buying ZDDP in bulk. It had a recommended use by of 2 years.

I always understood oil had a shelf life but a few years ago Blackstone Labs tested oil in sealed cans . They determined the oil they tested was
still good even though it was decades old?

I think that what Blackstone is looking for as good oil. Is different then the chemist at the oil manufactures. Blackstone's attention is on contamination for the most part. With engine oil. Contamination is a major concern. Our FD don't have that issue. So my question. That I need to get answered is. Is there a shelf/run life of EP gear life? Interesting thought. Bob Dunahugh

OK,

What has been missed in the above, is that most of the reference is to storing the oil in a closed container and at a constant (more or less)
temperature.

The discussion started with the lube oil on a final drive. That is most certainly not any of the above.

Matt; the recommendation/instruction I received was stored gear heavy oil in a closed container.
The lube would "go bad", expire. My knowledge is dated, at least a decade old.

As far a Blackstone analysis goes, they do a containment test, not a test for hi pressure wear
properties.
