Adding a Qt of liquid to the oilpan is still a Qt of liquid no matter what
type of liquid, MMO or OIL.
However depending on the configuration of YOUR oilpan, the shape and type
of the sump curve, is how much the level will change at different capacity's
You may have a dent in your pan that will also throw off the level mark.
There also may be some "solids" in the bottom of the sump that will push the
level up into the wider areas of the pan. Do you have a stock unmodified
oilpan or is it modified or third party manufacture ? I have modified oilpans
for some racers with baffles and side galleries to allow for extra oil
or oilpans for banked track racing.

Check your pan, also check to see if you have the proper dipstick and guide
tube for your year engine.

Gary, I think you would have to wait more than a minute for the oil to
drain back into the pan. I let mine sit overnight and found I was still
half a quart short (as per the stick) when I checked it.

As an ex-Wynn's man, I would have recommended Wynn's Supreme instead of Brand
MMO, but the problem you have, is you didn't wait long enough to get a true
reading. A certain amount of oil stays up in the engine for a while. Wait
overnight, and then take a reading. The oil will mostly have drained down by
then, and you will get a more accurate reading. Then re-scribe your dipstick,
if necessary.
